I have a encore with a Hankins 45 cal barrel. I’m shooting 250 grain pittmans over 55grains of imr4198 with direct ignition fed 215 primers. Velocity is 2520 fps and accuracy is 3 touching at 100 yards. After each shot the firing pin is sticking, I have to bump the barrel to get it to break down. I have heard I may have to use headspace shims? Anybody ran into this? If so what did you do to fix? Thanks in advance

The first thing I would do is service the firing pin and spring. Make sure they are clean and the hole the pin goes through has no build up of carbine causing the pin to hang up. Next I would check the head space to make sure it’s correct.

Also worth a sanity-check that your pin is still straight. I had an issue in my 7mm Rem Mag when the firing pin got bent somehow. It was causing occasional misfires and pierced primers.
I wanted to replace the firing pin but given the state of supplies these days I couldn’t find a replacement so I bent it back straight and it has been working fine since. Though it is still on my list to replace it; something just doesn’t feel right about having a twice-bent firing pin in my gun…

You may need to replace the firing pin return spring. If memory serves me, this can be damaged by dry firing. Like others have said clean the firing pin and hole. Shims are used to adjust adjust the heads pace on metallic cartridges. Break actions are different in terms of headspace. Not sure how that would equate to our muzzloaders. Mike Bellm sells firing pins return springs, firing pins, pretty much anything you need. I have used his springs and kits to do Encore trigger job and like the results. He has written a ton of information on Encores and provides a lot of instructions. Hopefully you get the issue fixed and don't run into any bigger issues like a sticking the action closed.

Thanks all. I had cleaned it last year after it had spent around 20 years in a smoker muzzle loader Figured it was still good. I took it back out this evening and found it was stuck. Cleaned everything really good and lubed. Seems to be working fine now. I guess I didn’t lube it good enough last year. Will make sure I take it apart yearly now. Again thanks all for the help

Just my opinion but the best thing I did for my encore was to swap out all the guts with Bellm springs, firing pin, etc. I even did the springs in the barrel locking lugs. Done a couple for my buddies also. Well worth the upgrade.
