I have a TC Encore with a .300 Win Mag barrel on it. It is a light gun compared to the SML on the Encore frame I bought from Jeff. It had quite the kick and was hard to keep on target. I had one of these JP Howitzer brakes put on it. It is now so loud I had to get DefendEar hearing aid protection for hunting and I wear muffs on top of that at the range. However, it really does the job. There is virtually zero kicks. It is like shooting a .22.
I really like the Encore build I bought from Jeff. It has his muzzle brake on it and it is not that much kick, but there is some. This gun is only supposed to be good to about 300 yards. I'm a hunter, not a target shooter, so the kick is not a real issue for accuracy at this distance.
I'm now beginning to consider adding one of Jeff's SPML-45 to my arsenal. He advertises it as a 500 yard gun. I'm guessing it will have as much or more kick as the Encore as i can handle heavier loads. Would it be possible to have a JP Howitzer type break drilled out enough to accommodate a funnel? Would it be as effective? Maybe the barrel diameter would be an issue as I think they only go up to .875, but maybe an adapter could be made.
Next question (and the more important one):
Do any of you use a Hankins SPML-45 for hunting. I know a lot of you are target shooters (I'm not). For hunting what features or customization or options did you get? Ballpark what did they cost you and do you think they were worth it and why?
I'm in no rush here. It is hunting season and I know everyone is busy. This purchase would be for next year if I decide to go through with it. I'm just starting to collect information to refine my thinking before I jump in.
By the way, I'm very new to smokeless muzzleloading. This is my second hunting season with one. I'm learning, but I'm not even close to many of the folks on this forum, so if my follow-up questions seem foolish, please keep that in mind.
