Life has thrown me a huge curveball heading into this hunting season. I am starring down the barrel of a lumbar fusion surgery in the next few weeks. Been told no shooting anything with recoil for 3-6 months afterwords. Really sucks as I haven’t even fired a shot out of my new build yet. Thinking of sighting it in with a super light load now just in case I an able to hunt our December season. While trying to search this I’ve read shooting sabots through Hanks muzzle brake is a no go? True or not? Looking for ideas on low recoil loads. I have N120, H4198, BH209, and 777 I could work with. hanksmessageboard.freeforums.net/thread/6457/finally

Can honestly say I feel your pain. Went through pure H--- for a few years with the 4th and 5th lumbars. In my situation, chiropractors kept me going.
My no recoil load is 35gr N110 over a 150gr Barnes copper. We only shot it at 50yds, but it was very accurate at that range. I wonder if N120 would be pressure starved at such a light load?? We were getting 2550fps using the N110 load.
CORRECTION: It was a 195gr, not 150gr! Sorry! Just goes to prove ya gotta be careful with the loads ya see posted, and I should have proof read prior to posting!

Yes, you can shoot sabots out of Hanks brakes. I cut the interior of my brakes to .478"--- .020" over bullet size. Hank cuts his to .500" since he allows for his funnel. I have shot saboted bullets out of mine with no problem so Hanks should not be a problem either. You might also consider a lead sled for your pre season practice. Three weeks after rotator cuff surgery I was shooting off the sled

Can't help you out any on a light load but I just recently switched to N120 and I love it . I'm shooting 63.5 gr out of my bolt action. Maybe try 50gr ?? Good luck to you !

I'd consider using 45 Colt loading data with some soft cast Cowboy Action pistol pullets. Something like Unique would be really mild, or you could stoke it up a bit with H110 or 2400. Another option would be to shoot a patched round ball with a light charge of Blackhorn or T7. I used to shoot 60 grains volume of T7 and a round ball out of my 50 cal long rifle and recoil was very mild. Not sure how the round ball would perform from a faster twist barrel, but I guarantee it won't kick much! You could also try 40 grains volume of blackhorn or T7 with a 200 grain pistol bullet to duplicate the old 44-40 rifle cartridge.

I would definitely be finding out where the rifling ends with a sized bullets and mark the ramrod accordingly to keep you in the safe zone.

I currently have my kids shooting low volumes of 4227. Our hunting load is 30 gr produces 1800fps with a 250 gr fury. They practice with a 200gr sst and 25 of 4227 recoil is non existent in a scout conversion it would be fine in a bolt gun for sure. I also recall 45 gr of 4198 was in the high teens mv also although I believe pressure wise that load is anemic.

Good luck with the surgery. I had a 3 level fusion a few years back (L4- S1) and I won't sugar coat it- the recovery was rough. But on the bright side I was able to shoot without any pain long before I was able to walk without a walker or cane.

Seems like someone had also come up with a light load using Alliant Blue Dot, but I do not recall the exact load.

Great advice gentleman thank you. I think Saturday I am going to sight it in with 50 grains H4198 and a saboteur 200 grain XTP. Should be pretty light recoil especially with the muzzle brake.

I would look at GORDONS RELOADING TOOL online as well . Its Free all ya gotta do is sign up . This way you can check pressures with those fast powders to see if youd be in their happy range for good preformance with light loads . Its kinda like Quickloads but not exactly . Pretty nice option at no cost . You can download it too . Check it out !!!

A Hornady 200 grain .40 cal xtp pistol bullet in a .45 sabot with low doses of the powders your using should produce low recoil. Make sure the brakes opened up for clearance like Richard said. Don’t push it for very fast speeds as the tighter twist in the smokeless barrels will make them shoot lousy. The recipe for low to almost no recoil can be found by 1. Adding weight to the gun 2. Different brakes can make a difference. Hanks brakes are pretty darn good. 3. Lowering the weight of the bullet 4. Lowering the powder charge.
I would try the lower powder charge and lighter bullets like some have already said.
I’m sure you will find what works best. And hope you heal soon.

I have been under knife twice on my Disc's. I have a .45 NEF use the H45/40 sabots with 200 gr XTP 17.0 of Bluedot. I also use the SST with 30 gr VV110, also 31.0 4759 same sabot n bullets. Easy on my back n shoulder

200 grain 40 cal bullets in a sabot with 32-34 grains of VV N110 and the recoil is almost non existent. I had 32 grains with the 195 barnes expanders set up for my son and you could shoot it 1 handed.

Was able to get the new rig out and shoot on Saturday to get the scope dialed in. I went with 50 grains H4198, 200 grain SST blem and light blue sabot. Recoil was very light. Didn't shoot any groups but its at least sighted in dead on at 100 which will work if I get a chance to hunt this fall.

A major problem with light loads CAN be temperature sensitivity. If 60g of a powder works well with a certain bullet, then 40g likely wouldn’t be a good choice at all. Whatever powder/volume you use, you want it in it’s designed pressure range. VV120 can get extremely temp sensitive at lower loadings. VV110 can work great (in a 45) from 30-to even 39g with a 195/200g bullet , knurled in a LBHS and a base protecting wool wad. 35-37 seems optimal. The 17g BD load gets about 1800’/sec with a 200g bullet with virtually no temp sensitivity and 22 magnum level recoil. Faster powders like 4756 and VV105 can be good choices for reduced loads. You don’t want a low pressure load! YOU MUST KNOW IF THERE IS A POWDER CHAMBER AND IT’S SIZE, IF THERE IS ONE!

“YOU MUST KNOW IF THERE IS A POWDER CHAMBER AND IT’S SIZE, IF THERE IS ONE!”
No idea. It’s a prefit barrel from Hank.
This all may not matter anyway. Surgery is scheduled for the 28th so looks like my hunting season is over. Just hoping to be well enough to sit in the stand with the kids.

Good news! I had my 6 week post op yesterday and the surgeon gave me the go ahead to shoot for our ML season starting after thanksgiving!! I will just hunt my woods at home where the furthest shot is 80 yards or so. I have some 275 Accumax but it seams like a waste to use those for such short range. I think I am going to size up some 300 grain deep curls with 54 grains of H4198 and see how that shoots this weekend.
