The two 30 cal ml's I built were used to take ten deer this hunting season here in North Carolina. Two deer were taken with the first experimental barrel which was a factory Savage 300 Win. Mag. barrel conversion using the 9/16" HIS plug and .040 bushing. That barrel I gave to a friend of mine to have and hunt with. The two deer he shot were DRT at about 100 yards. The load he was using was 65 grains H-4350 Federal 215 primers, full formed Hornady 150 grain SST @ 3025 fps from a 23 inch barrel.
The other eight deer were taken with my gun that I built using a Krieger .30 cal 4 groove 10 twist 26.5" barrel suppressed and a Savage target action mounted in a H-S precision stock, also using the HIS 9/16" breech plug. My load was 68 grains RL-17, Fed GMM 215M primers, Hornaday 150 grain SST full formed, and Remington 150 grain Core-Lokt full formed bullets @ 3428 fps ave. The eight deer taken with my gun were shot from 50 to 175 yards, five were bang flops and the other three only ran about 40 yards each.
Mostly I hunt from a 15' high box blind located in a cow pasture where 200 yards would be the about the longest shot possible, and with cows in the area I did not want to back down the velocity in an effort to dump as much energy possible into the deer and to minimize the chance of a pass through. I can that I am very happy with how the 30 cal. has worked so far.

That is excellent. I am personally very interested in your guns, how the arrowhead plug and 209s are working and any other info or pix you have.
Thanks for sharing

That is really cool. I think he's using the HIS system rather than the Arrowhead 209?? Am I missing something here??

Thanks for sharing Linebaugh, I am using the Hankins ignition system and don't know what you would need to do with a 209 system to handle the pressures that are being produced in the 30 cal.. The 3428 fps load is most likely in the low to middle 60,000 psi range. Check out the original 30 cal. thread it has more details and some pictures. I will be glad to answer any other questions.

Thanks for the link, I don't know how I misses that before. That gun is purdy and I thank you for taking that step towards innovation. I think most of us do actually. I wish sub cals were legal here and also wish the cans were too. Then again if they were we probably would not have any big deer left.
Did you build your own sizing die? How hard are the .30 cal pills to size? Did you make a punch that mates with the boat tails you are sizing?

Way to go...What's pressure ceiling are you imposing on your loads...? I would think that smaller the caliber, the thicker the wall...higher pressure ceiling

linebaugh, the bullets size easier than the 458 full formed bullets, but different bullets may require a different die setting depending on its construction. The punch nose is flat and it doesn't seem to distort the boat tail during the sizing process. The initial die that I used was a Hankins 45 cal. combination die which I made adaptors for to sizing the 30 cal. bullets using my barrel drop. After I realized the 30 cal. was going to work I made its own die.
The biggest advantage to using the suppressor is not needing to use hearing protection. The sound of the shot is not real quiet and the deer definitely know they are being shot at because of the supersonic crack from the bullet.

At those speeds it would be supersonic for a long ways.

What I'm going to do next is try to find the most accurate and combination.

Congrats on your success. You must be very pleased with how your vision tuned out. Well done. Thanks, I was really happy with the way it worked out, and not having any problems to work out considering the pressures that it is producing.

Great job, there are endless bullet choices for 30 caliber. I wish we could hunt with something smaller than .40 in VA, I would be onboard.

Good job and nice report. A few years ago I thought about building a .270 SML but it wouldn't be legal in my state so I never did.
