I am thinking through my next build and since talk is cheap and my funding is temporarily to low to order the barrel... What are the boards thoughts on bedding the barrel shank on the big, long shanks we typically use?
My build is going to be a very heavy bench/blind gun and I plan to have the barrel contoured to match the action for the first 5 or 6 inches. At that point I am looking at a straight taper to 1" at 30". This will be on the Savage target action so that shank diameter will be in the 1.3ish range as I am not using the nut.
Due to the extra heavy barrel I was considering bedding the barrel out nearly to the end of the straight shank. I would love to see the support but I am weary of 2 things.
1.) Will the barrel whip/harmonics be enough to cause me grief if I attempt to go this far out?
2.) Can I even maintain a solid stress free bedding job over that long of an area?
Not that it makes any difference but the stock will be a B&C Medalist M-40. I will mill a solid aluminum block to fit the mag well for the 3rd screw and additional bedding to support such a heavy barrel.
Any thoughts are welcome. Perhaps some of you have done this or have knowledge about it that I do not have. Thanks for reading.

I typically bed 3" in front of the lug on long heavy barrels, so far there have been no ill effects with very good accuracy and I have done many, I have also full floated in front of the lug with good results.

On the heavy barrel subject...How thick of a Lug can you go with and still have a workable headspace ?...I'm thinking the beafier the more support.....

Krieger barrels have a significant up charge on barrels larger than 1.250. Drop

yes you can bed stress free but you must be careful, your pillars need to be torqued to the action when it is set into the bedding in order to be truly stress free but its no problem to do, just prefit everything and make sure all is well before gluing it in..

Thanks for the responses so far. I typically bed 1-2" into the shank myself but with this build being so big I thought I might try to go longer. Looks like it is thought to be feasible so I am going to go for it when I get that far.
I realize there is an up-charge for barrels over 1.2 usually. It's fine, there will be an up-charge for the extra barrel I need as well.

I truly enjoy all the information you guys offer on this board. But what is up-charge on a barrel? I have never heard this.

You should bed at least that first 5 inches of the barrel and maybe more especially if you are building a long barrel (over 28 inches)
SML.... You never ever ever need a lug thicker than .250 inch. It does absolutely nothing to help you and in some cases will hurt you as it increases your shank length on a Remington type barrel and lessens the strength at the shank. Keep it short and you'll be fine...
The prices listed by barrel manufactures are figured using a blank of 1.250 diameter. to go bigger the next size is 1.375 so you have to pay the extra for the raw material that will eventually be turned into chips and go back to the scrap yard. Not saying bigger is or is not better but if you ain't going to push the pressures way up there then the bigger barrel won't help you.

I would tend to agree as far as size goes. 1.250 is plenty of dia but if you want bigger than by all means go for it, certainly not going to hurt, just more weight..

Bestill has shot some good competition at Friendship and I think he beds for 5 inches or so but do not quote me on that. He may respond also.
