Last year I took a nice doe at 170 yards one shot one kill. My son was able to take a nice 8 pt. in Pa. today. This was the first time we were allowed to hunt on Sunday for deer in Pa. The buck was shot at 120 yards which is about the ideal range for the 450BM I have been using a stiff hand load of H110 and a Barnes 250gr BT muzzleloader bullet that comes out of my Ruger camo gone wild 450BM with a 22 inch barrel at 2500fps this a deadly combination. The Barnes bullet will open up at 1100fps and since it's all copper it will stay together and has pasted through on both deer that have been taken.
I really like this Ruger its very light and it is plenty accurate for deer or bear out to 200 yards after 200 yards the drop starts to really have a effect on the performance. It was not designed as a long-range cartridge so if you keep your shots at 200 yards or less you will have a great light weight package.
The Barnes 250gr BT is a .451 diameter which lets you seat the bullet out a lot further than the Hornady 250gr FTX this lets you put more powder in the case to get to 2500fps which is doable and safe in a bolt action rifle with a 22-inch barrel.

Good going. I am really liking the caliber. Very versatile and can be shot from mild to wild.

Got a buck yesterday with the same gun, different handload. 200 grain ftx over lil' gun. I really like how the gun handles in the field, but will be re-examining other loads. 2 shots on target. Neither bullet exited, although damage to the lungs was extensive. Shots were between 120 and 150 yards. Got this load to shoot, but not much time or components for much more testing. Will be looking into some heavier bullets (sounds like the barnes would be a good place to start . This rifle cartridge combination is definitely a winner for the limited firearms areas.

Very fun and mobile in a short gun!

The 22" barrel keeps length down, and gives great performance with the 450. I'm very happy with the results so far...
