Hi, I'm Richard from Hawaii. Just shot my new Hankin's muzzleloader this past weekend. I posted some questions on another thread about maintenance and powders. Check it out and chime in if you can. Thanks!

Welcome to the board. How is Hawaii for a shooting/hunting atmosphere? Is it difficult to buy shooting things, components etc? I picture it as one big tourist oasis but I imagine there is country side property with small villages, farms, dirt roads, fences and game to hunt. Would love to see some pictures from where rural people live like "normal" rural people here live.

Hey Fred. Sorry for the late response. Didn't notice it until recently. There's some decent hunting going on in Hawaii. Three of the islands have axis deer. There's mouflon sheep on two of the islands, Hawaiian feral sheep on two of the islands, and pigs and goats on almost all of the islands. Pigs and goats are overpopulated because not enough people hunt them. Another thing is there are no predators in Hawaii. No bears, no mountain lions, no coyotes or wolves, no snakes. There's a lot of pig hunters in Hawaii. Most people go dog-and-knife. Others go with bow. Hard part is that pigs for the most are nocturnal. So you are lucky if you see them before sunset. Many people hunt illegally after dark. But people that go dog-and-knife do well even in daylight hours. Every year, we look forward to the Lanai public hunt. You can shoot axis deer and mouflon sheep. Towards the end of the pandemic, people were shooting some monster bucks because no one was shooting them for a couple of years. This year the Lanai hunt was in June for muzzleloader, and it continues until October for high- powered rifles.

So as far is opportunities. Your best luck for public hunts for deer and sheep would be on Lanai and the Big Island. There's some good opportunities for some guided hunts on the islands of Maui, Molokai, Lanai, and the Big Island. Pigs and goats you can find on most island except Lanai. As far as ammo goes, you are at the mercy of a few gun shops. You can't buy ammo online and have it shipped there. On the island of Lanai, there are no gun shops. So how do people get all their powders and primers on the island for the muzzleloader hunt?

No varmints that you can hunt, although there are mongoose. There are feral chickens. In some areas you can hunt peacocks.
