Getting ready for TN muzzleloader season I shot my savage 50 ml2 with the last two MMP sabots from the old batch I had. The bullet holes touched as normally do. I opened a new bag of short MMP sabots. Shot four from the new bag and they shot all over the place. Temperature was in the 50s waited atleast 15 minutes between shots. This gun has always shot one inch groups. I Had Installed new ventliner last fall only had 12 shots on it before this trip to the range. Has anyone had this happen when changing to a new batch of sabbots ? I've had this gun 12 years or more and shot several pounds of powder and hundreds of sabots and never had a change in accuracy. Thanks

If everything else is the same....and if the sabots are the same brand and type, measure the sabots...the length...thickness of the material, etc.

Are the new sabots going down the barrel easier than the old sabots?

Went back to the range today. Shot 4 more new sabbots they still shot everywhere. The new sabots load good and tight like normal. I haven't had time to measure the new ones yet. I loaded and shot some black crush ribs they aren't as tight of a group as the MMP used to be. but will definitely get me through deer season. I will try and figure out what's going on after deer season. Thanks for the input.

Good you got better results. When I had a ml2 the red CR harvester sabots were the runner-up to the short mmp. Kyle Pittman sells them if you can't get them local. Best to you on this season hunting. Also I at one point had to push a piece of scotch-brite through my bore to remove some stubborn plastic fouling, only way I could tell it was there was the scotch-brite had a slight whitish residue. Just a fyi and my experience with mine.

Thanks Dennis I've used the red crush ribs and xtps with good results. I switched to Hornady interlock soft points last year and cant remember if I tried them or not can't find my notes. But don't think I did because I only have a few left.

But don't think I did because I only have a few left. I am giving the Interlocks a try as a lot of the xtp's have been hard to get. Also I notice the jacket on the Interlock seems to be tougher than an xtp mag ie I can run a xtp mag through my sizer 1 time and it is good in my Scout. The Interlock I have to pass it through the die 4 times. They shoot decent.

Finally got around to shoot some before the fast approaching TN muzzleloader season. The mmp and xtp still wouldn't group for me. i Had my knephew with me so he could shoot a few times before the juvenile hunt. Figured it was cheaper and have less of a kick to shoot my ml2 than the 7 mag. He doesn't like shooting the 7 mag but when he shoots a deer he doesn't notice the kick. I weighed 5 38gr charges of A5744 And let him shoot three for a group and twice at a metal plate. we walked to the 100 yard target to see how he did and mark the shots. Low and behold it was a great tight group with all hole touching. I don't know why these sabots won't shoot 44gr like the old ones did but they shot great at a reduced load. Im Ordering some fresh mmp sabots Gonna go back and try shooting again soon to see how the new sabots shoot. Don't know if I got a bad batch or what. All the sabots look same when fired from 38 or 44 gr charges.

Back in the day most people with the Savage found that .458 diameter bullets in the black crushed rib sabot shot the best out of them. Before I got rid of mine I was using the Hornady .325gr FTX. Better accuracy and terminal performance than the XTP
