Learned something new the other day talking to a couple guys who have shot the cva scout conversions plenty until they moved on to the bolt conversions. This guy asked me if I ever got vertical stringing when shooting my scouts, I said yeah sometimes, and asked what is that? He says it's the lockup when I close the gun it isn't the same each time and it affects the group. He says to close the gun pretty firmly, well I know Jeff Hankins has made that statement several times on videos but I didnt realize why. I have a scout in 6.5CM that have been working on a load for and have had this problem of vertical stringing until now. I started snapping it shut and the groups got tight . just a heads up for anyone having the problem with vertical stringing with this gun. love my scouts though. kip

I also put some grease on the lockup surfaces under the breech when the gun is open.

Are you sure it is the scout? I had a TC Encore with a .300 Win Mag. When I first sighted it in, I was getting a lot of vertical stringing. It turned out to be barrel heating. I found I had to wait quite a while between shots for the barrel to cool sufficiently. Once I did that, it settled in nicely. I recently got a Smokeless encore build from Jeff. I noticed how quickly that barrel heated up when I shot it. So, with my lesson learned from the .300 Win Mag, I let the barrel cool between shots.
You may be right, it may be the lock-up, but you may want to eliminate barrel heating as the cause of vertical stringing if you have not already done so.

Break opens have been known to vertical string ever since the first Encore came out. It was first noticed by CF shooters and brought to Mike Bellm's attention, who found two corrections. One was to increase the locking lug spring (HD) and the other was to modify the locking lug itself for a rock tight solid lockup. According to Mike, adding weld to the locking lug then grind it down to fit tight when closed. IIRC I was the first to bring it to Mike's attention while shooting the Encore muzzleloader at 200+yds over a decade ago. Mike sent me a HD locking lug spring and by itself it fixed my vertical strings.

My vertical string were due to heating. I had done trigger jobs on my Encores that included a HD lug spring in the kit. Perhaps that is why I didn't have an issue after ensuring the barrel was cool.

great stuff here, yes I have had issues with barrel heating doing it too but have been waiting for cool down to eliminate that. heating wasn't the issue this time though, the lugs locked up tight but I wasn't snapping it shut hard enough. my hands are very very weak and if I don't make myself do it firmly, I'll get lazy. It seems to be less of a problem after the gun gets used for a while.
