Yep, changed with the new laws effective 1 July. VA G&F also announced that VA would conduct it's first Elk hunt next year in the 2022 season, details to follow.

Congratulations to Virginians!
Wish Iowa DNR/legislature would get with the program when it comes to 40's for muzzle loaders. They now allow straight walled cartridges with much less foot pounds of energy than any muzzle loader load in that caliber. Makes no sense, but then, that's government for ya.

One year too late for me! I tried to order one from Jeff a while back, but he was out of .45 barrels and only had .40s. Since I could not use a .40 in VA, I had to wait. I got the .45 this spring. While my adventure in to smokeless was delayed a season, I've very happy with the .45!

Nothing at all wrong with a good .45 Shot one last night, a ragged hole @ 2960 FPS with a 303 HC in front of a good load of Benchmark, same load I used in CO to down Mr. Antelope @ 733 yds.

Hillbill is so right. The .45 will do everything the average hunter needs. If however you are not average and want to shot ELR, then the .40 "might" have a slight advantage in the BC department.

I know this has been discussed many times before. The advantages to a .40 are two fold
1. If you enjoy a lighter gun you can shoot about a 50 grain lighter bullet in the .40 with the same performance as the .45 which means less recoil in the same weight gun.
2. If you want a super long range gun you can shoot the heavy high BC bullets which have a marked advantage over the .45 caliber.
Accuracy? both are very accurate

I'm probably a below average hunter, so a .45 is fine for me!
