Hi there, I am Carsyn from Saskatchewan, I joined here a couple months ago but only now am getting to a introduction post!!
I am here because I read about "the other forum" on the other forum.... If that makes any sense! Anyway I wanted to come check it out.
I saw quite a few threads over there from years gone by about sub cals, which interest me because in Saskatchewan I am allowed to hunt with any cal and any powder type! I tried asking there if anyone knew about how to make a 30 cal sml work and perform at something like 30-06 or 300 win velocities I kinda got told pretty quick that nobody does that and they're not legal to hunt with anyway so why? Followed by if you try it you're on your own... thinking outside the box of what they had built was not very accepted ... so I will try here.
I already saw a thread here about one guy who was experimenting with not seating the bullet all the way down on the powder by the use of a stop collar on his ramrod which is something that I had thought of too! It may allow a gun that has a powder chamber to shoot reduced loads similar to what can be down with centerfires.
I am sorta looking into a sml build but I know I can't afford a custom from either Hankins or Arrowhead so I kinda feel silly taking up their time, but then again I would probably end up using one of their plugs at the very least just because they are the best system, part of me really wants to go with a DI plug but the most likely action to build on for me is a savage bolt action so that would a bit more fiddly for a hunting gun, otherwise I would go DI in a heart beat.
I saw one build but I can't remember which site it was on, the guy had used a Howa mini action for a 7.5 pound .40 cal build, I think he had only a 20" barrel maybe it was less. He was using mostly BH209 but also some light smokeless loads. Pretty cool indeed, .40 cal would probably be the biggest I go though, I don't need the extra dia for legality so why put myself through more recoil? I see the future of sml going smaller if anything.
Anyway that's quite an introductory post, sorry for rambling, now you know why I am here and kinda what I hope to learn about.
