I made time today at the polar bear shoot to break out my .40 Encore barrel I got from Jeff several months back. The 26" button rifled barrel has a radial brake and is setup with a load through funnel. The load I tested today was 51.2 Grains of IMR 4198, 228 Grain .402" AccuMax Hard Core smooth sized with an Eastern Maine wool wad. The average velocity at the muzzle was 2619, average 100 yard velocity was 2376. Density Altitude was 404', 56 degress, 65% humiodity. This yielded a doppler verified BC of .359 G1 / .191 G8 by JBM conversion, .196 G8 by velocity comparison. I am very pleased with the velocity and accuracy that this load produced with only this on load tested. I fired a total of 6 shots, 2 - 3 shot groups. The smaller of the 2 groups contains the cold bore shot. Recoil was less than my .410 single shot shotgun. Anyone looking for a good woods gun or a gun for a youth, I highly recommend getting one of these barrels or complete Encore build from Jeff Hankins.

Does Jeff still have the barrels? Yes, but you better get them while he has them in stock.

Do you remember what the cost was, and did you have a muzzle break installed? I just purchased a TC Encore pro hunter frame to build a semi long range muzzle loader.
Thanks

I have a .40 PacNor barrel in I beleive 1 in 16 twist in a small shank Sav with a vent liner BP. With the same 228 grain bullet would that same 4198 powder and weight be doable? I do not think I ever used 4198 in it before.

I have been shooting 47.5 and 48.5 gr of h4198 with a 225. In a omega with a 1.060 barrel. Low to mid 2500 fps and very nice to shoot. Mine is 209 ignition.

My gun has synthetic stock and forearm, Leupold VX2 4-12x40AO, Leupold Mark 4 rings, steel base, barrel band with ramrod underneath. As best as I can tell with my scale, it weighs 9 pounds 12 ounces.

Kyle and others, Those of us who have graduated from round ball smokey MLing are certainly aware that 50 and 54 cal roundball shooting would be down to 500-600 ft-lbs of energy by 75-100 yards. The RB energy limitation and later, BP/subs with poor BC’d bullets such as the early used .429 240XTP/sabot in 50s just confirmed to controlling authorities that 45 - 50 cal was about as small as MLer cals could go. However , with a growing # of states allowing 40 cal MLers, I’m convinced that 40s will be increasing significantly. Your bullets are definitely the leading edge of this movement. A 40 encore could easily be the most cost effective woods rifle period. With H322, 2015, H4895 much higher velocities are possible, but the 50+ g H4198 load will likely meet most of our needs for shorter ranges.

I know I can hit 2900 with IMR4198 and a 228HC. Just want to keep impact velocity and recoil down for this rig.

64 gr of h4895 with a 225 and 240 gr bullets nets 2720 and 2680 fps in my small barrel. 66 gr of h322 with a annealed 195 barnes yields 2800 fps. These are all with 209 primer.

I was sitting next to Kyle the same time he was shooting his 40 cal Encore I was shooting my 40 cal Encore. It is no fluke.
