Still at a stand still. I am a one man wood cutting operation with limited resources. I got a chainsaw, a lawn tractor, a small cart and a 25 ton Tractor supply woodsplitter. When the log truck showed up with 20+ face cords of logs, I will say it is a daunting pile. Especially when all said and done, this wood needs to be moved 100 yds uphill before it reaches its ultimate resting place. Long story short, I will not be shooting for a while. I will say that projectiles have been showing up very nicely. I now have Hornady 300 and Rem 300 HP's, 325 FTX's and 250 monoflex's in large supply. Galliant 405 lead coated flat noses too. I am averaging 2-3 face cords per day and I am not retired but old enough to know that I can't do more than that. Sore back and legs tell me when to stop. Figure I will be tied up thru May, weather permitting, on getting this wood put up. And now the lawn needs cutting every 4-5 days. LOL. Good thing I am not a turkey hunter. That's about to start here in NYS May 1st.

Well, I messed up my back a few weeks ago doing firewood and was seeing the chiropractor every few days this past week. Still had a little pinch but felt way better. Decided to get back at it yesterday and cut and loaded 5 cart loads, transported them to the splitter area and stacked them up ready to start splitting. Threw the back out again. So, since I am not totally laid up and can walk and sit, I am going to the range in a bit to shoot that 405 cast load again and see what it does on a nice clean cardboard target. Will be a short session.

I feel for you brother. I do the chiropractor gig as well. Gets old real fast.

That 405 cast load is a no-go. A real sprayer. I was fooled last time out by old bullet holes in the board when I was missing the paper. The last group from two weeks ago that I thought looked like a sideways strike just may have been. still not confirmed but today this load was miserable. So bad that I shot a known 2-3" load and it shot to point of aim with a "normal" size group. Not sure what to do to make the big lead bullets shoot. Still got over 200 of 'em. Hmmmmmmm.

I feel for you. Hate having bullets laying around that won’t shoot.

So the back is almost better but scared to try it out on some hard work at the wood pile. Good news is that I now think I have just about everything I need to work with the SOCOM for a long time. Well stocked on bullets: 300 rem HP's, 300 Horn HP's, 250 Horn monoflex, 325 FTX and 405 Lead powder coated FP. For powder, well stocked on lil'gun, IMR4198, H110, Accurate 5744. Primers: Was lucky to have a bunch before election/pandemic. Had stocked up for my .45 ACP reloading when I acquired my 1911 a few years ago.
My biggest problem is finding reliable load data. There is so much available on lil'gun as it seems to be a major go-to powder and you can corroborate many sources and feel confident about solid starting and max loads. But other powders are spotty and the sources iffy.
I am leaning on the 250 mono's so far and 33 gr lil'gun. Most consistent groups so far and a seemingly perfect whitetail bullet and over 2000 fps. Next most consistent is the Rem 300's with 31 gr lil'gun. The 325 FTX's and 29gr lil'gun have never been crazy good but will always stay inside 3". For a 100-150 yd woods gun I am OK with that. Have not hurled the Horn 300 HP's yet and cannot get anything going with the 405 lead bullets.
I am basically a mono bullet guy when it comes to deer and meat I, or others, will chew on. Have cut my gums numerous times on jacket fragments and chomped on pieces of lead to. Not pleasant and the pieces even made it thru a grinder.
Like almost every gun I have owned and played with, I get a little crazy about having "enough" stuff to practice with, hunt with, etc. I worry about future availability or a component change or discontinuation. I end up with way too much stuff and settle in to one or two combo's and having lot's of leftovers that sit around and never get used. Anyone else do that?

Yep! Find what works, and trade off the excess for the things you need. I do it all the time. I dont have anything .458, or I would gladly try and work out something.

Yes. One good thing is that we all shoot .458 bullets in our .50 cal ML's. They will be used and bartered.

Luckily ran into my Monoflex load pretty quick. Wishing I would have stockpiled more before these shortages made thing a little difficult. Built an AR 6.5 Creedmoor this spring I am wishing I had picked a different cartridge now. I am sure in time things will come around.

Joel,
Mono flex's have been very available as of the last few months. Midsouth has them and Midway have them last I looked. They are a buck-a-pop but if they are "the" bullet, I have no problem making that investment. Never really saw them much under $45 for 50. Last I saw it was like $56 for 50. I would like to try the Barnes 300 TTSX but keep telling myself that if the 250 mono's work great, why even bother? Same exact type of performance with a little more speed for some hydraulic fluid displacement.
I did use the H110 with the 250's and got two groups at 100 yds that were vertically strung. Not a huge sample and they were still good enough groups to hunt with. 2-3". However, vertical groups to me with a gun with this trajectory make me wonder if the lowest shot ends up the one that I shoot at a deer with at 150-200 yds and miss or wound something. I like clusters or horizontal groups.

Update: Just swapped out my mounts that were too low, even thought they were "high". A buddy had a Leupold 1 piece mount meant for an AR. It grabs the picitanny rail in 5 spots. The swap out took 1/2 hr. It appears that I have gained about 1/2" in height and boy does that make a difference. The scope is right there when shouldering the gun. This will make shooting much more comfortable. Now my problem is getting a chance to shoot anytime soon. My back finally got better about a month ago and Two weeks ago I started sawing and splitting firewood again. Way behind and should have been done a while ago. Also, starting next week, Sundays will be in the woods checking/trimming tree stands and ground blinds. Close to 40 set ups so it's a lot of work. Only things left on this gun is sorting out a sling option and maybe getting a new trigger.
In terms of a hunting load this year, I am 99% its going to be the 250 Monoflex with 33 gr lil'gun. I still plan on using the 30-30 a lot too and my 150 gr TTSX coppers. 7mm Mag for shooting huts by fields where I can get a rock solid rest.
Cheers.

Last weekend showed a buddy how to reload. We were working on 458 SOCOM loads using 325 FTX’s. H-110 wasn’t impressive. H-4227 showed some promise on upper end loads. IMR 4227 had the best accuracy. We didn’t get to max load but the hotter it got the tighter the groups got. Using a 2x magnifier and red dot he got a 3/4” group at 50yards.

Showing someone to reload is a great thing to do. All of us that have done it our whole lives take for granted that it is easy and simple. As soon as you show/teach someone how to do it, all of a sudden you realize how much knowledge you have in your brain. All the little things regarding safety, consistency, organization, manual references, nuances between pistol, rifle, caliber, etc etc, come boiling out of your mind.
Regarding the new powder choice, I have not considered this powder but sounds like a good option so far. Do you know the speed compared to lil'gun with the 325 FTX? Is it possible for use with the lighter 250 monoflex?

I have not looked into 4227’s ability to to push the Monoflex. He wanted to start shooting his 458 again and bought a reloading set up. He bought FTX bullets. I brought 500 primers and some powder.
His 14 year old daughter decided she wanted to deer hunt last year. I set her up with a 300 BLACKOUT pistol. She got her deer and the shooting community got 3 shooters. Dad went out and bought a 458 AR pistol and a 300 pistol. The son enjoys reloading and shooting but has no interest in shooting animals. Dad is becoming an advocate for AR’s. They have gone from not sure why anyone would want one to the adaptive best choice.

That's awesome. Nothing wrong with not wanting to kill things but still loving to shoot. I am slowly getting to this point myself after a long life of killing a lot of things. It's funny how the AR thing bites people. I am loving the platform more and more after having zero interest in it.
In a little bit, I am going downstairs to reload a handful of 325 FTX's and 29 lil'gun. Will use to get this gun back on paper now that I re-scoped it. I have 20 rds of the mono flex 250 gr loaded up for final adjustments. Don't want to "waste" the mono's. Have about 250 of the 325 FTX's and they shoot to the same point of aim as the 250 mono's but don't group as tight. Now just have to find some time to shoot it. Did firewood all morning in a light drizzle. Got all I wanted to do done for the day without pushing myself. Then the sun came out. LOL. Gonna watch the Yankee game while I reload some rounds. Then BBQ some chicken.

Lot's of things happening right now. Bow season opens tomorrow. I got 3 weeks vaca sprinkled throughout the next 2 months. I bought an e-bike to get closer to many of our stands. I ripped the rim off a .458 SOCOM case because I forgot to lube it. Stuck the case in my die A smart guy at work in our shop got it out with no damage. Gotta still re-zero my .458 since remounting the scope. Got all my wood done. 20 face cords. All put away. Log pile GONE. Hurt my back again pressure washing my deck standing in bad position for 5 hrs. Deer season is here. Spent last 8 Sundays working on stands. Trimming lanes yada yada. It's TIME to hunt and shoot guns at the range between bow hunts. Time for some reloading, hanging out at camp, smoking meat, having fish fry, being with the best of friends often. Hunting more stands than previously able to due to the ebike. Take some load of the old legs.
What is better then the beginning of fall in the north east? Cool temps, beautiful foliage, deer moving, being in stands, being with friends, shooting guns and sharing stories. Threat of snow in the next 3-4 weeks. Let's do this! Glad to be alive and inhaling air. Thankful for many things.

Got out for the first time with the bow. No deer. 70 degrees and feels weird for October. Came back to camp and got the SOCOM out. Have not shot since swapping the mounts. Had 14 rds of my preferred load of 33 gr lil'gun and 250 Monoflex with me. 25 yds hit left 1" and a little low. Dialed right 16 clicks and left elevation alone knowing it would be higher at 100. Put 2 shots in the same hole 4" left and 1" low at 100 yds. Dialed 16 clicks right and 6 clicks up and printed a 1 1/2" group 1" above POI. Shot 5 shots at 200 and printed a 3 1/2" group 5" low. I had a two gallon plastic jug and did a water test at 25 yds. Put 6" of foam board behind it and a 2" thick rubber seat pad and then a big piece of ash firewood. Shot the jug. 12" of water. It blew up the jug, passed thru all the foam and rubber and lodged in the firewood barely. All the petals of the monoflex were ripped off and the base was lodged in the wood. found 6 of 8 petals in the jug and foam and they are like little knives. Thought this slug would stay intact. Hell of a deer cruncher but gotta watch for the shrapnel in meat. I think you could easily kill Elk and Moose with this round. Came home and started up the tumbler to clean up the brass from this session and the one a few months ago. Grabbed some primed brass and loaded 20 more rounds for some final adjustments and for hunting.
We open Nov20 for gun. l got to load up some 30-30 and 7mm Mag and do some verifying which should be quick and easy. The fun is starting. Bow hunting, shooting guns at the range, cooking good food and being with friends a lot.

Sounds good. Finally got time to get my load work up done. I am using the .452 250gr Mono in the 450bm. Same bullet just a few thousands smaller. I settled on 36gr Lil Gun in a 20" Encore, and also recovered one that went thru 4 gal water jugs and laid to rest behind with NO petals lost. So you may have just had a fluke? I think they will be alright.
