Any help making my decision easier would be appreciated. I have a 10 ml ll in stainless/laminate stock that I have had and used to hunt since I first learned about smokeless and Savage coming to market. I have another blued Savage that came with composite stock that I added a Boyd s thumbhole and bedded. Both guns are good to 150 yards but I want to be able to have a gun to take Whitetail hunting and reach 3-400 if needed. Would you get a .45 barrel for savage 10 ml ll, change from 209 to better ignition system? Necessary to change stock and or bed, both? Any recommendations on brands other than Boyd’s, maybe a synthetic . Or Sell the stainless/laminate savage I don’t have bedded, and have a smokeless built or buy something already for sale. Reasons to go either of these routes?

Since you have the Savage already and have a laminated stock and you have experience with the 209 ignition I would recommend that you go with a new 45 caliber barrel. But preferably without the barrel nut. Going with a heavier shank barrel will let you run the high velocity loads that most of us use.
Now if you didn't have anything and you were starting from scratch then you could build what ever your wallet will stand. But for a hunting rig I don't think you will be disappointed just converting you Savage to a new 45 Caliber go with a Brux barrel and please install a good muzzle brake on it. That will make the gun much more fun to shoot.

I had a Savage ML II looked for a barrel change, contacted a couple but with no luck. Sold it and had one built on a 700 short action with a brux barrel for hunting (glad I moved it down the road) very happy with the new SML never looked back....and its a shooter great investment

would have to agree on moving it on and building on a CF action. I am not stretching things when I say I have owned at least a dozen MLIIs, likley more. they were decent guns and still are BUT will never equal a quality CF action build, not throwing rocks mind you just stating my opinion.

It would be best to invest in a center fire action build and not the savage. I have owned two Savage ml2's myself. Both are gone, and are the only guns I've ever sold. If you ever need a factory part for that action your only option is to find an aftermarket part. Savage quit offering parts and service years ago. Don't know what current resale is on them but you might get enough from the two to cover most, if not all, of a smokeless muzzleloader built on a center fire action. Additionally, fewer and fewer shops will even work on one. Sure, you can find places or people who will, but not like you can one built on a center fire action.
This is from a "shooters" perspective. I like to be able to shoot my guns as much as I want and want them to last a lifetime. With a center fire build you have that, with the savage you will have problems. Eventually the problem will be something you can not fix, or at least not easily fixed. For a hunter who doesn't expect a high volume of shooting over their lifetime a Savage might suit you just fine. I don't know your expectations of your muzzleloader. Personally the savage has meant one thing to me, headaches. My Remington 700 build, is a rifle I can count on for my lifetime. And probably my kids lifetime too.

Ditto for smokelessk and Hillbill's assessment. The 209 ignition will definitely give you problems with heavier loads........which could be problematic with a "barrel nut" barrel......which are thinner than what we use on CF action builds.

One of the BIG reasons I would never again spend good money on an MLII has been stated above, Savage has abandoned the ole MLII, it has become the red headed LIABILITY step child of the gun world, precisely why never again will a major maker offer a SML for sale to the public.

Sooner or later with the SAVAGE you will have a smoke pole that's really just alright it will serve its purpose for those that just want to get by and do not want to spend BIGMONEY I felt the same way until I viewed the YOUTUBE with the SMOKELESS MUZZLE LOADERS and the Kentucky Challenge, so I sold the one I had for a $1000.00, I wanted a Cadillac so as I stated I moved it on down the road and had one put together by a fantastic builder here in NC and with that being said some of my friends have had some put together in fact (5) total after they have seen my toy. Now there are VARIOUS ones on this BOARD that put these SML together with the parts from HANKINS PRECISION GUN PARTS for a FEE, I purchased my action from BUDS GUNS (Remington 700 short action single shot type) a Thumb hole stock from Stocky's stock (VARMIT TYPE) and in about 3/4 months it was ready...... Good luck

First off I wouldn't give a $100 for a savage, for the simple reason parts are no longer available. If you shoot a lot you are going to have to replace parts sooner or later. I have one now with a pac-nor 45 barrel. It has counting 50 cal and 45 cal a few thousand rounds fired. I am on my third replacement of the firing pin support (think thats what it called),replaced the cocking piece pin once, and replaced the broken bolt handle once. The rifle shoots great have shot groups an inch and less at 300 yds with 50 and 45. Have shot deer at 300 yds with fast and slow loads. Lets say I have a savage and I pay out around $400 for a 45 cal barrel. In a week, month, year I have something to brake that makes the rifle unable to fire, I cannot get the part so I have a tomatoe stake and lost $400 for the new barrel. I have not shot this rifle very much the last few years to make it last as long as I can. Like it because it is lighter than my custom rifle and when I hunt in the woods it easier to carry when walking in. When hunting my box blind I can drive the 4-wheeler up to the stand and just pull the custom up. Have had 3 custom builds by Richard still have my favorite sold the other 2. I am getting up in age so these should last me what time I have left to hunt.
