Background I am shooting a savage ml2 that is factory except for a bushing breechplug. Current load is 16gr 4756 a 200gr xtp with a 40/50 sabot traveling at just over 1500fps. My 50lb 8 year old son is shooting this and harvested 2 deer last year without issue. Both were within 30 yards. Question does this load have enough energy to get to 100yrds. He is a very accurate shot But also super recoil sensitive , I would like to know given the right conditions the Bullet would do the job. From what I can find it is slightly above most .41 mag loads which from my research Many folks have shot deer to 100yrds. This load is carrying just over 1000 ft/lbs at the muzzle.
My other option is to let him shoot the load at targets and increase the powder a few grains also increasing to a 225gr bullet and 20 grains of powder, I know he won’t feel it shooting at a deer.

The last option sounds like a better idea to me, while the current load will likely work a little extra energy would allow some peace of mind.

I don't think you will get a lot more speed out of that powder before it blows the sabot. I tried 4756 in my ml2 with 250gr bullets I think around 25gr and it shredded the sabots I gave up on that powder. VV N110 at about 30-32gr would be mild recoil and more speed and energy.

20 gr shooting a 250gr bullet was just under 1800 FPS with a little over 1600 ft/lbs I don’t have access to 110 locally although I have looked for several years I do have 4759 but believe there are pressure issues with 4759 that low of a charge.
He did kill a 185 dressed whitetail with the lighter last year however the deer was about 35 yards away.
I am confident with 20gr being enough, my son is smart enough, and recoil shy enough if he sees a Black sabot .45 cal going into the gun instead of a blue .40 cal one he will want to know why.
I may try a little harder to source some the 4759 at 35 was close to 4756 at 20gr velocity wise.

36gr of sr4759 and a 45LC 225gr Barnes XPB in a MMP short black might work but peak will be pretty low. The same load but using N110 is a cream puff to shoot. Barnes also offers the 45LC XPB bullet in a 200gr.

I have a bunch of the xtp and I noticed the Barnes are almost a dollar a pop. I will be on the lookout for some n110 again.

In my ML2 with 50 cal barrel--- For those light kid charges I like 4759 in 33 to 35 grains under the dark blue 40X50 sabot shooting a 200 grain 40 cal XTP. I use a Magnum base under the sabot, hot glue it in to keep them together for loading, and it gives good speed and accuracy. very light recoil and I've taken whitetails out to 125. Of course shot placement is the key. that pistol bullet will do the job. If you find some VV N110 just drop back 2-3 grains and it will be just fine. I have used light loads, 33 to 35 grains, of 5744 and it might be better as it's a double base powder and not likely to give ignition problems with light bullets, it is the "dirtiest" smokeless powder I've ever used. Reflects my experience and opinion. Others will differ. 10ga

I do have a drill bushing installed Vs the stock savage vent liner and that seems to help with ignition. It has a much shorter flame channel. Right now I have him shooting 4756 14gr right now (Kicks like a 22). and will most likely load 20gr for hunting I know he won’t feel it when shooting at a deer. I will shoot a few groups with 4759 but both seem to hold about 2in groups at 100 yards. Tight now He will hit a milk jug every time at 100. About a month to go.

I decided to go with 20gr of 4756 and a 250gr xtp. We are 2 for 2 again this year. He killed a doe at 50 yards that went through both shoulders during the youth season and we had a deer come by during our regular gun season that I decided to not let walk away for the second time after it caught us getting into position. He made it to about 125 before he stopped to check us out again which was a little outside his effective range. I am probably glad I missed the shoulder but that xtp turned his vitals to mush bullet appeared to lodge in the offside shoulder but I haven’t cleaned him to know for sure. I am having trouble posting pictures but will try to get them uploaded. Second deer dressed out at 200 and ran about 40 yards before expiring. flic.kr/p/2k9UPNjflic.kr/p/2k9Qzxzflic.kr/p/2k9UpjZ
