I’m trying to decide on what power scope to buy for my hunting smokeless muzzleloader.
What size scope do you have mounted on your hunting rig?

Not sure what your price range is but i think the new Nightforce NX8 in the second focal plane 2.5-20power would cover it all for a hunting rig

What are you looking to budget for this scope?

To me first thing is to consider one that will handle the blast from these cannons, NIGHTFORCE is really hard to beat! The NX8 2.5x20x50 MOAR would be a good pick with the (low in) for woods or paths or even in a field at dusk, 20 power for the open field or target shooting. I use the Nx8 4x32x50 MOAR NIGHTFORCE on one and will be installing a NX8 2.5x20x50 on another I up graded from the NXS series and the NX8 now offers in both focal planes, (the budget has control tho) Euro Optics or Sports Optics are good places to shop

I just picked up a lightly used Sightron S111 6X24X50 for a future build. I've heard they hold up well, glass is nice.

I use what I can afford. Since there are so may lifetime warranties it is a broad choice. Vortex would probably warranty their scopes if you drove your truck over them, not saying they are the best glass but I have well over 1000 shots on my Viper HS and never a problem and it tracks very consistent, and very affordable. I would like to have more magnification at the bench but 16x is good for the field.

I have a 4-16 x 50 Vortex Viper HS LR. Has been fine for deer at 300 yards-plus and is still holding zero. I struggle at the KY Challenge at 400 yards though. But for hunting good enough and if I drop it on a rock I won't be heart broken.

I have a Nightforce SHV 5-20x56 on my bolt gun. I just got my Omega custom and it has a 3-15x44 leupold vx5hd on it. The Nightforce has been great. I need some range time with the Leupold.

What are you looking to budget for this scope? Looking to spend no more than $1800. Most of the scopes I own are used but no opposed to new.

With that figure you are in the range of various Nightforce NXS and the NEW NX8 at both Euro Optic and Sports Optics and at times they give a 10/12 % discount, as others have mentioned Swarovski Vortex and more are also sold at these locations and are FINE scopes, you have a lot of options. I offered up on EBAY a NX8 brand new sealed box for $1850. But pulled it. An individual told me a while back (if you cannot see it you cannot shoot it.) GOODLUCK!!

With that budget I'd stay with Nightforce as it would add to your collection of fine glass.

My biggest problem is I’ve always over scope on the lower setting of the power. I’ve been a bow hunt all my life and will let them walk with 30 feet before I pull the trigger.

My biggest problem is I’ve always over scope on the lower setting of the power. I’ve been a bow hunt all my life and will let them walk with 30 feet before I pull the trigger. I hunt from a climber (woods) and sit with mine on 3-4 power and turn it up when/if needed. I have shot tree limbs right in front of me that were completely blurred out at 5 power and needless to say no deer. I would try to at least get down to 4 power for the low end.

I have a Leupold VX5-HD 3-15 on my .45 SML and I love it. Glass is incredible and has the illuminated dot as well. I am shooting a pretty stiff load so we will see if it holds up to the recoil of my gun. I have fired about 40 shots so far and it seems to be fine.

I have been using a Vortex PST Gen II 5-25x50 FFP EBR-2D since last season and was pleasantly surprised how useful and durable it was. This is probally too much scope for most situations but I hunt over bean and corn fields. As a reference I was shooting 72gr VV N120 and 270gr E-max not using a muzzle brake.
