I recently acquired a 2003 Huntsman .50 cal muzzle loader. Its got the stock breech plug that requires the little orange discs. I've heard that these are hard to come by allow a lot of blowback. Does anyone know of anyone currently producing 7/8" 209 direct fit breech plugs for these guns? Metrics Unlimited no longer produces them and Precision Rifles breech plugs, ive heard, are not of exceptional quality.

I don't know of anyone else producing them but I have a fix for the one you have. If you get some WSM or WSSM brass you can cut and trim them down to the proper head space then use a 12mm O.D. by 3mm thick oring in the front side of the carrier and use large rifle primers and it works great even with smoke free BP subs I made ten of them with a hack saw and a file and got them all to come out at .333 but your rifle may be different. I no longer have that rifle but Ill try to find a pic of one of my carriers and post it.

So you pretty much built brass carriers? I take it you haven't had any issues with blowback, fitment or reliability?

Have you seen this video? Yours is 7/8 and the video is of a 5/8 plug but maybe a sleeve can be made?

I have, thanks. It's the video that started me on my search for a modded breech plug. I've watched a few of his videos. I don't know what he would charge, I haven't gotten a hold of him yet. Judging by the price of his ignition systems for certain CVA models I'm guessing I'm not going to want to pay that much for a breech plug. They were in the $240 range. I know PR sells them for $60. Though, I have no clue what the quality difference would be. Seems my options are to roll the dice with a PR plug, use the little orange discs or modify a casing. Unless, of course, I find out Hankins can get me one a little cheaper than $240 lol.

This was with the NEF sidekick 5/8 breech plug. I did have a Huntsman 7/8 plug before that and pretty sure the carrier pocket is the same. I did try the MU plug only because I had five bricks of 209's and that plug did leak at the primer and the threads but much less than the factory plug.

Thanks for the pic and info. I think I might have to give that a try.
