I have an STI Nitro 10 that shoots lights out with Winchester white box 180 gr hp. The problem i'm having is that 10mm ammo is like the holy grail,(just cant find it!). I stopped at Redding Reloading today and picked up some dies. Does anybody have any pet loads they can share? Powders, primers, bullets etc. Thanks Guys! Dave

2005 or so I shot 8 or 10 deer with one. I used Accurate powder and Hornady XTP’s. I never saw anything impressive and they needed multiple rounds. Very similar preference to 357 hard cast hits. If major bones were not broken the deer showed little signs of being hit. Had a big buck go 400 yards onto neighbors and die they told me at the time “it’s our deer he died here” they never fired a shot. I put him down 4 times. I know I dumped 2 magazines and was pretty deep into my third. That was the last one I shot at with that gun and went back to the 44 they might be able to soak up a few 44 loads but not many. 44 also made shorter blood trails. Hopefully the better bullets of today will make you experience much better than mine. Most of if not all projectiles went threw. I don’t remember ever recovering a bullet. I don’t think they were expanding.

I have a Glock 20 with LoneWolf longslide and a 6 5/8 LoneWolf barrel with Burris Fastfire III on top. I shot the old winchester Black talon loads out of it, expansion was not a problem, I went thru the trouble to build it, play with it, killed one deer with it and now it sits in the safe. I think the key to the 10 mm is shooting hot loads with good bullets.
Ammo like Buffalo Bore etc. that is loaded to the original pressures the 10 was designed around will get the job done. Most 10mm ammo you buy today is weak compared to the original design specs.

I should have added all the deer I shot with the 10mm were on deer drives in agricultural areas in Minnesota. They were not calm when shot and our deer do run on the bigger side. Ives seen fawns here hanging weight of over 80 pounds. We don’t break 200 very often but 150 is pretty common.

I know what your saying! I killed an 88# button buck at a State Park hunt a couple years ago.
My buddy killed a huge one too last season. I witnessed it. Maybe freaks of nature or something.
Deer are very tough creatures no doubt. I would bet those bullets were not expanding tho as you said. I have been wanting a 10mm for a long time. I wont hunt with it exclusively, unless under the stand.
I have put down a few wild, and domestic critters with 9, crit def, at point blank, and they work fine, if you know what I mean?

Two weeks after my second shoulder surgery I killed a doe with my Glock 19. 9mm 124gr Hydoshok. Entrance hole was 2” round hole just below her jaw (she was coming at me) no exit could not find the slug not even a bruise on the hide back of the neck. I started carrying a different round for personal defense after that. 4-5” of penetration? Granted it pulverized the spine but it should have come out. I really want to shoot one with my 380 and and LeHigh Extreme Defense rounds to see what they do but have not had the opportunity to finish one off with it. I would never use it as a primary for hunting. Yes I carry a little bitty pea shooter now but it’s with me 24-7. Yes I’d prefer a long slide 1911 but a lot of days I cannot carry something that big. Over penetration is another concern I think Bill’s statement above was spot on. My belief is with the correct bullets and full power load the 10mm is all one needs to take calm deer at reasonable ranges. My attitude for deer with a 44 is it makes them flinch enough to know you hit them. Put 2 in for good measure WAIT go track up your animal. Even calm deer I haven’t seen where you are going to drop a deer in it’s track with a 44. The ones I have shot with the 460 S&W that’s a whole different story they go down in sight. 454 I put in same class as the 44 but a lot less pleasant to shoot. Good luck on finding the “right” load for your 10mm. Mine wasn’t that finicky accuracy wise. I’d be looking closely at www.hornady.com/ammunition/handgun/10mm-auto-135-gr-monoflex-handgun-hunter#!/ Hopefully that projectile will be for sale.
