Yesterday was a pretty nice day to go to the mountains and do some shooting since all of our hunting seasons have ended. We had some snow on the ground which really helped with visibility when shooting and calling shots as long as the snow is not to deep even the 300gr bullets don't show up in snow when its more than a few inches deep.
I was shooting my 338 Edge which I built before hunting season it is shooting really well we have a rock we shot at 1200 yards and one at 1445 and then one at 1875 yards. The wind was light and at 1200 yards I only held a little right of center to hit the rock. My elevation was 25.2 moa up from 100 yards at 1445 it took 35.8 moa and at 1875 yards it took 57.0 moa at 1875 yards I had 4 moa of right wind to hit the rock center mass.
The 338 Edge has a 31 inch barrel 1-9 twist and weighs 17.5 lbs and I shoot it off my portable bench. The Edge is built on a Rem 700 long action which mag. bolt Sako extractor. 20 moa base and a jewel trigger the stock is a laminated 3 inch benchrest stock. the load is 106grs of RL33 and a 300gr SMK lighted with a 215 primer. I use Norma brass.
Now for the Big Bad Boy the 338/408 Chey-tac. Built on a big Bat action with a 36 inch long 1-10 twist Krieger barrel 1.450 diameter bedded into a barrel block and into a 6 inch wide aluminum benchrest stock . weight 65lbs. Gun is shot from a heavy steel portable tripod which I built for heavy long range guns that at least another 65 lbs. using Jamison brass and 142grs of BMG and a 300gr SMK it is pushing that bullet at 3325 fps vs my Edge at 3085fps.
This Chey-Tac is a real shooter. at 1200 yards 20 moa at 1445 yrds 30.2 moa and at 1875 yrds 52 moa from 100 that's flat. The vapor trail was really easy to see and the arc of the bullet was really pretty flat he needed almost the same amount of windage as I did.
If you have a real need for speed and have deep pockets its hard to beat a 338/408 Chey-tac or the bigger 375 . There are a few 375 chey's in my area but they really don't have good bullets for deer hunting I think Berger is working on a new 375 because the caliber is really getting popular.
I did not feel handy capped using the edge because it duplicates my 338/378 I had for my years and made some really long range kills with that gun in Colorado.
Another thing that I bought and have been using and really like id my Leupold RX2800 TBR range finder this will range just about anything you point it at out to 2200 yrds. I am talking about dark colored objects like trees and rocks not big shiny signs and houses. It worked the other day with blue haze in the air which really is hard for a laser range finder to read in the Leupold works great and at $449.00 its a heck of a buy.
