Going to New Mexico next year for elk and would like to start working on a load for my CVA Apex .50 muzzleloader. All of my muzzleloader experience to date has been with my converted 45-70 barrel shooting smokeless for deer in NY. Looking for suggestions on loads as I’m new to black powder.
Thinking I’m going to get one of Hankins CVA Apex ML DIS Replacement Plug and through some research it looks like blackhorn 209 would be the best powder choice? Was considering trying the Fury .50 320 gr bullets but maybe a .45 in a sabot would be a better choice? Anyone have any input on powder, charge weight, bullet and possibly sabot if needed?

I don't know the New Mexico regs, but is there a reason you don't want to use your Conversion with Blackhorn?

I would check the ammo regs. first. They tend to get a little funky in some of those western states.

IIRC a 45cal sabotless with BH209 is legal for elk in New Mexico.

Hello fellow Zoo yorker! If I had to, I would probably start with a 275 accumax and 100 grs, volume with wool or veggie wad. 120 grs is the max for mz according to Blackhorn's site. Considering you're not shooting an ordinary mz and you only have a 25 inch barrel I'd still play it safe. Jeff shot BH on one of his videos and it shot very good! Giving Jeff or Kyle Pittman a call would steer ya in right direction.

110grV of BH209 and a 275gr bullet is right around 2100fps out of a 27" barrel with a 209 primer. Thats a popular sabotless smoker load for a 45cal 1-20. LRMP HIS/DIS/ASG will yield a tiny bit more in some cases.

I've had excellent results with mine with 110 gr. of BH by volume, 209 primer and the Barnes 290 Tipped MZ bullet in the blue sabot.

45 cal is legal in NM I built one for a customer in TX last year and he killed an elk using BH209 AT 110 by weight with PITTMAN 300 GR AEROMAX

I used a 50cal 325gr fury star tip 2 with a .060 veggie wad and 90gr by weight of BH 209 to harvest an elk last fall. I was shooting a stock 50 cal. Savage. The shot was broadside through the lungs at 150 yards. The bullet passed thought with 1.5” exit hole. The bull stumbled 20 yards and was down.
