Our camper has a crack in the black water tank. Any suggestions on what product/procedure to best repair it?
So far from my research I'm seeing quite a few products that are listed as not bonding with polyethylene or polypropylene materials. I haven't yet determined what material my tank is made from. It's a Jayco 5th wheel, 2010 model. Hoping some members might have good insight on repairing it. I was half thinking use glass bedding and window screen to make a patch?

Not sure this would be the correct product, but check out the specifications on Marine Tex.

I have not tried it on the material you are speaking of but I would not hesitate to try LEXEL caulk. It has about a 300% elasticity and if combined with a mesh of some sort I believe it would work for you. Lexel takes a while to fully set up but things I have put it on you can not get it off. It is very sticky when applying. I have only seen it in Clear and white. I bought mine at true value hdw. Not sure if this helps, hope you find a solution.

I would weld it back together using the correct filler rod. There will be a code on the tank of what plastic it was made from.

What ever you decide to repair it with, make a test repair first. Let that repair sit for several days to fully cure and then try to remove it. A lot of plastics are simply not repairable. The black water tank is not something you would want to start leaking on you. Maybe call the manufacture and ask if there is such a repair kit or material that will bond to the plastic tank.

Go to an auto body repair supply house and ask them what product they use to repair the new plastic type bumpers on automobiles. Most epoxies like Marine Tex which I use for bedding, probably will not adhere to those types of plastics. Having previously been in the auto body industry, I know there is a material used for repairing the bumpers.

Thanks for the replies. I ended up picking up a product called Permatex plastic tank repair. From what I understand it contains solvents that chemically react with the plastic tank welding it back together. Haven't tried it yet but I will some time soon, when it's not so humid.

3m makes a good product 8115, pretty much sticks to anything

Well, patched up the tank this weekend with the permatex tank repair kit. It makes for one solid patch! Put 30 gallons of water in the black tank and left it for 24 hours. No leak whatsoever! I'm going to buy an extra tank repair kit just to keep on hand. (The kit is a one time use deal.) It sets up a lot quicker than what the instructions say. In less than an hour after doing the repair I filled the tank with water.
