Please read this entire thread as it outlines some of the changes and modifications for the Kentucky Challenge.
Written this day of July 31st, 2019:
As most of you know, Hankins Custom Rifles holds a muzzle loader shoot (known as the Kentucky Challenge) twice a year on my property in Harrison County, KY. We have been doing this shoot for 5 years and now, 10 shoots later, we have evolved and improved quite a great deal.
I have had a few regular attendees advise me on some changes that might help us grow and possibly get a few more participants. Therefore, I’ve made some changes to the event and wanted to outline the rules for the Challenge going forward.
Entry fees - these have been modified from the original fee, so please read over them carefully so you know what is expected from you when you arrive.
• I ask that all entry fees be paid in CASH - "No Checks Please".
• $60.00 Entry fee - to attend the shoot (this includes lunch on Saturday, T-shirt, and eligibility for door prizes). Whether you are a shooter or spectator, all attendees pay this entry fee, however, if you want to bring your wife or kids, they do not need to pay the entry fee.
• $20.00 Shooter fee – if you shoot on the range, regardless of whether you shoot in the competition, all shooters will pay this amount which will go into a pot to be paid out at the end of the Challenge.
The payouts will go to the First, Second and Third place winners after combining the scores from 100, 200, 300, and 400 yards.
• $20.00 Early entry fee – for anyone who shows up prior to Saturday.
Additionally: Children under the age of 18 can attend for free. They are permitted to shoot with parental supervision on Friday and after the match is over on Saturday. Children 14 and older may also compete in the Challenge, but they must pay the $20.00 shooter fee if they want to be eligible to win.

SCORING RULES - Since we will be giving a small amount of cash to those who place, we want to clearly spell out the rules for the Challenge and how the score will be kept.
Richard Desimone has been making our score board and it has been working out pretty good for the most part. We have had a few mistakes in the past, but I think we have figured out now how to fix that and we will be keeping track of the scoring using a computer and an excel spreadsheet at this shoot and for future shoots.
We have what we call an official target for the Kentucky Challenge. We will be using these targets for the match and everyone will be shooting these targets.
Score will be kept for these distances as follows:
• 100 yards
• 200 yards
• 300 years
• 400 yards
• Smallest Group (measured with electronic calipers) no matter where the group is on the target. We are measuring for size; placement of the group does not matter. All three shots must be on the target or a DQ will be given.
• 100, 200, 300, and 400 yards – Highest score on the target. The target consists of an X ring, 10 ring, 9 ring, 8 ring, 7 ring, 6 ring and 5 ring. Each shot will count for the highest number ring it touches. If the bullet barely touches the 9 ring, but most of the bullet is in the 8 ring the score will count as a 9. The X ring will count as an additional point, so if you shoot all three of your shots in the 10 ring and only one of them touch the X ring your score would be 31 (10 points for each shot and one extra point for the X). If you shoot all three of your shots in the X ring then your score would be a 33 (10 points for each shot and 3 extra points for the X rings.) And so on.... If you shoot a bullet outside the 5 ring but it is still on the target it will count for only one point.
The score board will have a place to keep the numbers and standings. The smallest group shot for each distance will receive a #1, second smallest group will receive a #2, the third smallest group will receive a #3 and so on. Then the highest score at each distance will receive a #1, second highest score will receive a #2, third highest score will receive a #3 and so on. At the end of the shoot these numbers will be added up to decide the Grand Aggregate winners. The three highest places will be the ones receiving the cash prizes, there will be a 1st, 2nd and 3rd Certificate given to the highest score at each distance and to the winners of the cash prizes.
Rules for the shoot. Subject to change and amended in the future.
1. Check your bore at the beginning of the match, make sure you can see day light through it.
2. Have a witness mark on your ram rod. This can be as simple as a piece of tape so you can visually see it.
3. You must shoot from one of the provided concrete benches, benches will be assigned Saturday morning during registration.
4. You will have a timed 8 minutes to fire your three scoring shots and two sighter-shots if you wish; but remember after 8 minutes the whistle blows and the relay is over. Any malfunctions, misfires, or problems during the relay will be counted in the 8 minutes, so please be mindful to have all your ducks in a row.
5. You can bring only five loads to the shooting bench, have your stuff ready, five bullets, five powder charges, and five primers. This will help you keep track of your shots.
6. There is to be no talking to the shooters during the match. Talking behind the shooting benches is to be kept to a very low minimum, as this can be very disturbing to some shooters. If you want to converse with someone, please take it somewhere other than under the shooting shelter.
7. If you shoot someone else’s target that will be an automatic DQ at that distance.
8. You must remain behind the shooting line if you are not in the shooting relay.
9. You must load, aim and fire your rifle in order to be eligible to win the cash prizes. New shooters can get assistance with prior approval from the range master(s); however, they will not be eligible to win the cash prizes. Handicapped individuals will be an exception to this rule.
10. All shooters must sign a waiver of liability releasing Hankins Custom Rifles and all its affiliates from any and all damage to person or personal property while on Hankins Custom Rifles Property.
FOOD
We will have a big breakfast Saturday morning prepared by Jeff Blakely, Bill Travis, and several others that chip in and help. For all who want to join us, please arrive at the range around 8:00 AM if you want to eat breakfast. We will be having eggs, bacon, sausage gravy, biscuits, and fried potatoes. There will be leftovers to munch on during the day while we wait on lunch.
I will be providing the lunch on Saturday with the help of several other members at the shoot. Lunch menu will consist of:
One farm raised pig supplied by Member Doug Schawrtz and smoked on sight starting Friday night. I will head up the smoker and preparation along with Mark Vincent who also brings the pork rub, as well as anyone else that wants to lend a hand. Lunch will be served late in the day Saturday after the shoot is over, usually around 2:00 PM.
Richard Desimone brings the best homemade potato salad and cole slaw you ever had, so be ready for a treat.
Mark Vincent brings what we now call chocolate crack (because once you start eating it, you can't stop) as well as a great cherry cheesecake dessert.
Dennis Walkley brings several bags of homemade deer jerky and that gets devoured very quickly.
We also have other items to munch on, but it's just too many to list.
All attendees can bring dishes to the shoot if they want to add to the food list.
Food for Friday will be your responsibility. We will have a grill for burgers if you want to bring them, and other cooking means for food. There is no electricity at the shooting range.
Sunday morning we will have a farewell breakfast for all that wants to drop in before their drive home. We usually eat early so we can start the clean-up and tear down, so please arrive around 8AM if you would like to eat.
It will be a hot August day, so bring plenty of water and drinks to last throughout the day. There is an old country store 2 miles from the range that has anything you might need, so ice, food and drinks are easily obtained.
We now have a nice bathroom with running water and a flush toilet so if you would like to bring your wife and or kids, they will be much more comfortable being at the shoot.
This is a preliminary plan and subject to change. I would appreciate any comments and or suggestions from the members of this board.
Also please vote in the poll as to whether you agree or disagree with these changes.
Thank you for reading the entire post.
