Well I wasn't to happy with my Krieger barrel I put on earlier this year an since I had a new Mullerworks 30 caliber 1-10 5R barrel on hand I decided to chamber it up for another 300 WSM. I normally only use 4 groove cut rifle barrels but I decided to give the 5R a chance. I had no problems chambering the 5R barrel there are reports of people having reamer chatter I didn't have any but that's not to say it can't happen with a 5R barrel.
The other day I test fired it and did a quick break in and ran some loads to see where my pressure curve might be every barrel is different this one will handle more powder than the Krieger but once I got above 62.2grs of RL 16 an a 210 SMK the groups opened up. Last evening I did some testing at 365 yards started off shooting 210gr SMK .010 into the lands it didn't like that so I backed out .030 and then it started to shoot pretty good I had planned on doing more testing at 365 yards before I went out to 1,000 yards but my buddy was planning on shooting this morning at 1,000 so I loaded up some 210gr SMK and some 210gr Berger 210gr LRBT they were also off .030 we the clear winner so far was the Berger's shooting 5.750 inches the Sierra's probably will shoot if I play around with seating depth and back the load off a little because it gave me to split 5 shot groups which usually indicates it is being pushed a little to hard.
Tomorrow morning we hope to test again I backed the Berger load of to 61.8grs and also loaded 62.2grs again to see if it repeats somewhere is this zone I believe the gun will shoot small. The new Sightron 10x50x60 looked really good this morning the sky was over cast but you could clearly see the X in the center of the 4 inch center patch you can actually see thumb tacks at that distance. Have good optics is a must for long range shooting I a lot of fellow shooters are finally realizing just how good the Sightron scopes are.
