I had the worst archery season I've had since college (15 years). I normally kill 4-6 deer during archery season (Oct 1 - mid November firearms season), but this year I only killed one small doe, though I passed many, many fawns. I was seeing fawns everywhere, all times of the day, and never with momma doe. After a few weeks of hunting, I began seeing why... dead dear all over the place. It looks like my area has been hit by EHD (blue tongue) again this year. Opening day of the Indiana firearms season was this past Saturday (Nov. 14). I didn't expect to see much, but the conditions were perfect. I shot a doe at first light, and then shot a fat buck as he came along behind another hot doe 2 hours later. Both deer were shot broadside through the lungs/heart at 70 (doe) and 55 yards (buck). I'm so thankful for the harvest, as this season has been rather discouraging. I'm also thankful that my wife was willing to come help me get the deer out of the woods and on the truck. The gun is a Remington 700ML action with a 27" PacNor .458 barrel, custom contoured a bit thicker than a #7 and a modified Savage-style 209 plug. It sits in a Bobby Hart Long Range Varmint laminate thumbhole. The load was a 10/51 duplex of SR4759/H4198 under a 200 grain SST in a Harvester light blue sabot.
