I have been using battery powered chainsaws on and off over the last couple years and have found I like them. My use of chainsaws is limited due to physical limitations. Often it seemed I was spending as much time starting a saw as using. My hunting accomplices use them for clearing shooting lanes for deer stands and most all yard work that needs a chainsaw. I don’t think they will ever replace gas saws for extended or heavy use. I think those needing a new saw for yard work they are an option worth a look. We have not used a gas trimmer or pole saw for 3 years. Battery power for those tools is far superior in our minds.

Haven't tried the battery saws yet but switched over on the trimmer 2 years ago and I really like it.

I'm sure a battery operated chain saw would be nice for yard work and clearing shooting lanes, but I would need a truck load of batteries to cut the fire wood I burn every year.

The batteries do last well but for your use Jeff battery power wouldn’t be practical. The largest battery power saw we have is 16”. Anything bigger than 16” I think should be a gas powered saw.

What brand are you using? The DR brand looks good?

I have used the Ryobi 18volt 10” bar and 40 volt 14” bar for a couple years. I thought both of them had there place. My brother picked up a 60volt 16” bar Dewalt last fall. The Dewalt is impressive. If I were cutting sub 6” stuff and had the Ryobi one source batteries that saw is enough. The Ryobi 40 with 2 batteries was enough to clear all brush at a stand and clear a 24” willow tree out of farmers field.

Stihl is the best one out there from my research, I've been considering one to carry on my tractor is the only reason I know.

My primary concerns with Stihl and DR is you are stuck with their brand tools and there tool numbers are limited. If I were to recommend one for “ home owner use”. I would most likely recommend the Dewalt. They have the greatest variety of other tools that use the same battery. They have portable air compressors impact drivers table and miter saws. I think there 60 volt can even be used in their 20 volt systems. If I owned a landscaping business and were using it all the time I’d lean towards Sthil with their backpack batteries or gas. For the average home owner who doesn’t use a chainsaw much the batteries are half the cost why not use them in other tools that would also get used.

How about Makita? I've been nothing but pleased with every Makita power tool I've ever purchased. They also have battery powered chainsaws.

Well, I just "pulled the trigger" and bought the Lowe's 12" 40v Kobalt with an extra battery. Charging up the batteries now! This should make a good addition to my 18" Husqvarna gas saw.

My parents have a Craftsman and love it. It won’t cut with a big gas burner, but not designed to. Works awesome for quick jobs and the battery stays up very well. I think you will love it

So, yesterday I went out back in my wooded lot and trimmed out quite a few small trees that were just not growing much due to the other large trees with block the sun from getting to them. Trees like 4, 5 and 6" maybe 20 feet tall. Taking them down to ground level. Then cutting them up into more maneuverable pieces. I probably cut on and off for a little over an hour. The 12" 40v Kobalt worked flawlessly and had not run out of juice. So, so far, I am very happy with the $182 purchase price..............$80 for the second battery. They wanted like $22 for a spare Oregon chain at Lowe's?..............$11 with free shipping at Amazon.........The same Oregon chain.

Well, hope Father's day went well for all the Father's out there. My 3 year old daughter went to "daddy's toy store" and returned with a 12" Makita chain saw, charger and 4 lithium batteries! Already charged them up and searching for the first job to use it for!
