Today was rainy and cool at 55* with a little wind so shooting was confined to 100 yards.
Started out by fouling and adjusting the scope on the .45 Rem./Brux for an approximate zero with the 250 gr. FTX being pushed by a 10/60 Clays/H-4198 duplex with .060” veggie wads.
Having the barrel properly fouled my comparison was intended to show the velocity and some degree of accuracy/or not with the 10/60 duplex shooting bullets of 200, 225, 250 and 300 grains. Point of Aim was kept pretty much the same save for one elevation adjustment prior to the 300 gr. bullets.
Starting with the 200 FTX velocity averaged 3037 with a 14 fps ES. Velocity and ES good but accuracy mediocre. @ 1.8”
225 FTX velocity at 2933 fps with a 34 fps ES and group shrinking somewhat but still just OK. @1.2”
250 FTX velocity at 2812……….forgot to turn on the chronograph for shot #1 but ES on the second and third was on 3 fps. Again, the group shrunk somewhat at .806” and looking a bit better.
The fourth group was with the 300 FTX and averaged 2670 fps. With a 13 fps ES and the group at 1.1”.
Staying with the 10/60 duplex I then shot a group with the 300 Parker BE which averaged 2673 (much like the 300 SST) and the group was a bit smaller at .800” but the ES was a little larger at 23 fps.
Lastly, knowing from past shooting that the 10/60 was not the best load for the 225 FTX I re-shot them with 8/58 Clays/H-4198 giving an average velocity of 2829 with a 26 fps ES and a group of .524”-------------much better.
Again, I was looking to see how the bullet weight effected velocity along with accuracy. With three shot groups, nothing is definitive……….just too small a sample but, it does give an indication of possibilities. I think that 225 FTX liked a 5/60 combo but did not have any in my box.
What one really need to do is decide on what bullet they like and want to compete or hunt with and then start playing with various powders or combinations. The above was just a crap shoot. Oh, and we did have the turkeys but they hunted and pecked out behind the range.
