I order a Ruger 450 Bushmaster to play around with since there now legal to use in Iowa first and second gun season also in Ohio and Indiana. This will be my short range option for woods hunting from a ladder stand. I will still be using my long range 45 ML for the serious long distance shoots but it looks like a handy little gun for close in work.
Does anyone own one or reload for one of these. I choose this over the single shot 45/70 many because of the .452 diameter bullets. Also the long mag lets you move the bullet ahead another .250 which will really help in the performance department. Plan on using H110 powder

A buddy got one for this season in Ohio. He was pretty happy with it. Said it shot extremely well with the 250gr ftx. Killed a couple deer with it. Really was happy with how it handled. Also, the brake seems to help with recoil.

I would be testing some long pointy bullets in 275 gr and 300 gr weights in that gun. Load them one at a time and extend the effective distance of the gun. Or, I would go the opposite direction and load some heavy bullets to 1050 fps and have a can on the end of the barrel. That should be a very interesting combination.

Check out BearCreek Ballistics in Michigan. They load a custom 285gr all copper bullet @2300+ out of my Custom Savage 16 w/20" Bison barrel.(Bolt gun only) They sell the projectile only also (for MLers) Great accuracy & absolutely hammer deer. .26BC advertised.

I choose the 450 Bushmaster because of the .452 bullets I do plan on trying some of my Pittman bullets and I also have some Hornady SST that I modify and put a aluminum tip on to improve the BC. There not as long as the Pittman's so I do have a lot of options. But I really only want this gun for close in woods hunting. I see Ruger is know making a really nice All American with wild camo stock and bronze cerokote finish with a 22" barrel and a brake that is a really nice looking gun.
