Every year I look forward to going to Western Nebraska to hunt with a couple friends, one being Zen (Dunthat). This year was my boy's first year going to Western Nebraska to hunt mule deer. We left Friday at 2am to head to a place a little closer to home before we ended up at our hunting grounds. By leaving at 2am it would put us at the public hunting grounds just at shooting light. Jonathan and I hunted for a couple hours to just check the new spot out. After only looking over a tiny part of the park, it looks to be an awesome spot that is half the distance to Zen's place. In the 2 hours we were there we saw over 20 deer with lots of potential. I will be running cameras there first part of the new year.
Once we finally arrived to our hunting destination, we were headed up the mountain to look for mule deer. Jonathan and I ran into a group of Big Horn Sheep with one that had a full 2 curls, WOW!!! We made it to our perch and I told my boy I would head around the corner to look up the canyon to see if could see deer. Making it to the corner I immediately saw a group of doe mule deer and ran back to get my boy. When we got into location the deer were around 350 yards and we decided to watch them hoping they would come our way to the water tank below us. We figured there had to be a buck with them due to the fact that it is the end of the rut. While I was messing with my pack Jonathan noticed a good buck with the group of does. We tried to get on the deer but they vanished behind some trees and as darkness came we decided to come back in the morning. We headed out with good daylight and as we came up on the water tank we noticed decent buck on the tank. Jonathan was eager to shoot the buck and at 200 yards away I told him to get ready. Once he was finally into position the deer started to move away and I had to get him to stop. He turned broadside and Jonathan sent the 200 SST on its way making a perfect hit behind the shoulder. He ran around 70 yards and fell over. We made it to our buddies house after dark with the deer in the back of the truck.
We ate and shacked up for the night by 930pm, long day.
Saturday proved to be difficult because everyone and their mom were hunting and all the public places were being hunted. We ended up just looking at alot of places and not seeing many deer we called it at day and head back to my buddies house.
Sunday we hooked up with Zen and at daylight we were on some good deer. I started chasing what looked like a good deer but after bumping a deer on my way to catch up with the other one I couldn't catch up with the bigger deer. I knew there was a feed lot to the east of me so I headed that way and as I was just topping the hill where the feed lot was I had about 50-60 deer coming right at me. I noticed a bigger buck in the group and felt it was a good enough one to take home. He crested the hill around 150 yards and I sent the 270 E-Max on its way. He ran about 10 yards and fell over. It looked like the 270 E-Max penciled thru but we found pieces of it while we were cleaning the deer.
During our trip we saw a lot of game and had a lot of fun. We saw a nice Bull Elk, Big Horn Sheep, lots of Pheasants, lots of Ducks and Geese, Antelope, and lots of Mule Deer. Zen has a great place to hunt and really has it figured out. He is still trying to hook up with big one and is trying to get his grandson on a good buck as well. I don't feel they will have any issues.
Monday we came home a day early and spent all day Tuesday (today) processing the deer we brought home. My mom came to my place to help and we started around 830 and finished around 3pm. Lots of meat got put away and we had a great day hanging out. It always seems to be a family event and we created a lifetime of memories.
