How effective is the muzzlebreak on a CVA Scout 45-70? Would one be better off having a more effective brake rather than use the factory brake? Thanks for any information.

On my Scout I'd rather have the extra two inches on the barrel than the brake. I find myself shooting it more with the brake off. With the lighter loads I don't find the recoil to be bothersome. I don't see my Scout as being a range gun but a hunting gun only. Handi and very accurate out to 200yds. I think the factory brake after being modified to use a load through funnel is about as effective as possible.

Something not to overlook is that will will need hearing protection with a muzzle break also. I always wear mine when sighting in but for hunting in woods up a stand I can't be putting in ear plugs before a shot.

Can you load sabot loads through the break?

The CVA break is as efficient as any radial style brake and works quit well at reducing recoil.. You can not shoot sabots through these breaks.

Jeff, If someone wanted to take the break off and shoot sabots do you sell a thread protector and if so what is the cost $

I don't have thread protectors for that barrel. The thread pitch is metric, someone listed it on this board but I don't remember what it was. If you wanted to shoot sabots you would be perfectly safe doing so by removing the brake. Worst case, if you just wanted to use it to hunt without the brake you could place a couple wraps of electrical tape around the threads to protect them and keep them clean.

I think Bestill makes a protector for the CVA Scout threads. I know he has made them for others.

It makes sense why the break would be a bad idea to use with sabots. I've shot maybe a 150 saboted rounds thru my scout with a brake and never had an issue
