My girlfriend, Mindy, is wanting to get a new pistol.. She looked at a S&W,, M&P in 9mm and also looked at a S&W 22lr with a built in laser... This is going to be a pistol she can carry in her purse and shoot creeps with it she has too... Does anyone have a recconendation or a better choice..

I have the 9mm Shield and it is the best sub-compact I have ever shot. It shoots well, has a decent trigger but the Apex kit is much better, and it points well. I find the M&P line to very reliable (I also shoot the M&P Pro9L in tactical matches, it rarely gets cleaned, and it keeps on rocking). It has caused a couple of Glock fanatics I work with to convert.
I also have the M&P 22 as a trainer. While it is a great pistol for the price and for the intended purpose it has a couple of issues (or mine does). It will occasionally over-ride the first round after a mag change and it does not always lock to the rear on an empty mag.

I would suggest looking at the Glock 42 & 43. I would also look at the Ruger LCP.

I looked at the Glock 42 but it was too small and I have medium to small hands. My paws totally engulfed that pistol. Recoil was very mild but precision Want so hot.

The 42 is small for me too. I have a 26 that I love. The LCP really fits my girl friend and daughters hand very well.

I own a SW MP 9 compact and a Shield..They are both fine pistols. The Shield CC's better but the MP has more ammo capacity. I put a full size mag in my MP which holds 17 rounds. The Shield holds 7 rounds with an extended mag. If you want to conceal carry the Shield would be a good pick. The MP 9compact would make a great purse pistol also. I put Apex triggers in both of mine. It's a toss up...Go and shoot both you won't go wrong.

I would takes any of the advise above if Mindy is already a skilled shooter and pistol handler.
If she is a new pistol shooter, my vote goes for a small, DBL action only revolver. Here are my reasons:
1) Long trigger pull for every shot (there will be NO DOUBT that she intended to shoot the gun)
2) No safeties to worry about, just point and shoot
3) Almost 100% reliable
My wife has the LCR is 357. We only shoot 38's out of it and she carries a +p 130 gr load in it. She does complain a little that it kicks too much. But it doesn't. She just doesn't shoot it enough. When she picks up the Ruger Mark II .22 pistol, she loves it. So....on the christmas list is a trainer just like her .38.......in 22 lr.
Seriously, whatever Mindy decides she likes to shoot with confidence is what she should use. It will be much more effective than swinging a handbag.

I just read this thread. My wife and I just went through this. She setteled on a S&W model 642 airweight. .38 speacial +P. Took it out and shot it today and she really likes it a lot. .38 regular loads Good little carry gun with plenty of punch. And hardly any recoil.
