Weather on Tuesday was the usual 71* to start with under clear skies with little to no wind. Today my intention was do more shooting with Dennis’s Fury Star tip .452” flat base custom bullets. To foul the barrel a little I started out with three of the “trial” 300 gr. secant ojive bullet at 100 yards. They did not do too bad and pretty much struck my intended POI in a ¾” group.. To compare with Kyle’s 300 gr. AccuMax’s I shot two shots at the same POA (same load) into a .292” group a bit lower. Scope was adjusted for zero with the Pittman bullets. Next, I put in 4 ¾” MOA and moved out to 300 yards (now using the same 77 gr. of H-4198 but switching to the 300 Fury star tip with the tangent ojive. This load produce a 2.740 four shot group and a bit low. It would need about 5 ½ MOA. Definitely the BC is no where near the Pittman AccuMax or AeroMax……………..but never the less, they did fly pretty darn good and well within the scope of a hunting bullet out to about that yardage. Kyle’s bullets will get there in 3 ¼ MOA. Moving on to the same bullet with 73 gr. of N-120 and the scope set at 5 ½ MOA the group came in a bit higher than POA but not by much. The five shot group came in at 3” even, with shots 3,4 and 5 going 2.3” For group #4 at 300 yards again, the same bullet but this time a 10/62 duplex of N-110 and N-120, Here the five shot group measured 2.3” Note: all three powder charges averaged almost identical average velocities……….right in the 2900 fps area. All produced acceptable ES’s with N-120 being the lowest @ 14, 10/62 duplex being the highest a 24 and H-4198 coming in at 20 fps. On any given day with the same or different bullets you could see these number interchange. I have typically gotten my lower ES’s with Kyle’s bullets and also the Hornady 300 XTP’s. Finally, I dialed my scope back down to the previous 100 yard zero for the Pittman 300 AccuMax with 77 gr. of H-4198. I should have fired the first two 100 yard shots with the same 4198 but forgot and used the 73 N-120 charge. This put two bullets ½” of POA but in the same hole at 12:00. Soooooooo, I clicked up two (1/2 MOA) and aimed directly at the two shot hole…………..aside from the shot being 1/8” left, it was in the same hole and measured .322” for all three. Needless to say I was happy with that.

At the top of the sheet I have DIS written Russ. Maybe I should make it more clear.

Is the DI system all you will be shooting with going forward?

There is a good possibility I will Steve. Not quite as convenient as the HIS but for bench work, which is about all I do, its probably the best way to go. No more bushings. Just eliminates another weak link in the puzzle?

As always, fine shooting. It takes quite an effort to work up loads, shoot and document.. Again thanks to Richard and all who put forth the effort to advance this sport. D

Those Fury bullets seem to be shooting pretty well.

I think these star tip bonded bullets have a niche' for medium range hunting. The Pittman bullets will definitely "reach out and touch game" at a longer distance due to the higher BC. In turn, this will flatten trajectory and allow more remaining velocity/energy. We are fortunate to have people like Kyle and Dennis to give us some custom choices other than standard fodder.
