No complaints on the chrono except the cheap tripod, but I knew that before I bought it.
My question is, how common is it for the first shot or two to read lower than the rest? My first range session with it gave 2095, 2125, then all the rest were around 2650fps. My second trip with a different rifle gave 2025 for the first shot then the rest were around 2300fps.
I'm guessing it's reading correctly and not reading the wad. Are my first shots on a fouled cold bore producing lower speeds? My seating pressure did not feel loose.
Any thoughts or similar experiences?

How far away is chrono from the muzzle? I keep mine 14-17ft in front of the muzzle, Mine is a pro-chrono not caldwell, but you need to have it far enough away.

Distance should not matter as long as all shots are being fired with the chronograph set at the same distance? As in "apples to apples?" Yes, the further away it is, the lower the readings as the bullet starts slowing as soon as it leaves the muzzle. Yes, you can have slower readings on the first shot or two if being fired from a clean barrel. You will generally notice that the first shot or two on a clean barrel will load with less pressure.............at least for me? Usually two or three shots should be sufficient for readings to stabilize....................there again, this depends on how consistent your loading pressure is.

If you are starting on a fouled barrel and getting that much variation, I would send it back. There is a problem with that unit.

18' away from the muzzle. So far, the first shot is on a fouled bore. My N110 and IMR4198 load is surprisingly clean burning, after many shots, you almost can't tell the rifle was shot.
I will bring my Marlin 45-70 along on the next range trip and see if it shows slow on the first shot. If not, maybe I need more seating pressure but it really doesn't feel that light when I load.

I thought that it did only because my directions say to set it up a minimum of 14ft from the muzzle. I have just over zero experience with one myself but have watched others alot. Your theory on the clean vs fouled barrel makes more sense.

Could it be that your cold barrel is tighter causing slower speeds?

Could it be that your cold barrel is tighter causing slower speeds? Could be but I don't think it would cause that much.
