After my 2000 chevy z71 Died oct. 25 2014 on the opening day of bow season....I have been in search of a replacement for it. Then I didn't have any funds set aside to buy one ,so it wasn't going to happen, well I have come into some extra money to at least put a good down payment on one,so I have been beating the bushes, internet, used car lots,dealerships,craigslist,ebay,etc....The best truck I found for the money powertrain wise imo extracab 4door, 2000,f250 with a 7.3 powerstroke diesel with 250,000 miles for 6500.00 dollars ...It seem to run out good with no smoke, new tires good brakes, was dirty inside and needs a paint job bad....It would be a great work truck and if it gets 20mpg then I could go to Kentucky quite a bit with all my gear.....Anybody know about these trucks...? Anyway ,every other truck I looked at today started off at 11 grand....My ultimate truck to get is a chevy/gms duramax powered 2500hd 4x4 with a z motor which was made in 2005 ....these motors had was setup beefier with bigger connecting rods and some other features internalling, on the exterior the injectors are exposed ,so if they need servicing other dismantling of the truck is not needed.... I'm wore out and wish I would have worked today, but I was on a mission....Anybody else had the same dilemma as me...?

My brother in laws entire family are die hard GM people. The only non GM vehicle they ever had was a late 90s f250 7.3 powerstoke. I don't know much about fords, but I think the 7.3 is the best diesel motor they have produced. I think the problem when trying to buy one is everyone wants them vs. their 6.0 diesel. I know they have tons of issues with them. My brother in laws truck had about 300k on it, when one day someone didn't set the parking brake and it rolled down a hill and hit a tree. I think the powerstokes are hard to beat
I have a 2007.5 (new body style) chevy 6.6 duramax. The combo of the duramax and allison transmission is very hard to beat. It is in my opinion the best combo out there. The earlier duramaxs had some injector issues which are pretty expensive to have them replaced.
I like the GM much better. Good luck, truck shopping can be fun but very frustrating as well

I've been looking since earlier this year and researching as much as possible. I'm not a Ford guy at all but they have some really neat stuff out there. The 6.0 diesel from what I've read and some word of mouth is this is the worst motor Ford ever built. The 7.3 is the best motor they built and are tough to find. I've been told the same thing mentioned, the DuraMax and Allison transmission combo is tough to beat. I learned from all my research that the 2000-04 DirtyMax is the one to stay away from with bad injectors. However my local mechanic said they have a fix out there that makes those years to be a great truck once the fix has been made. I don't know for sure if that's true or not. We also talked about the Dodge and the Cummins. Basically Dodge built a 100,000 mile truck and put a 1,000,000 mile motor in it. Which is the motto I've been told for Dodge. I love Dodge but just can't go back and spend my time fixing transmissions and front ends. I don't care for Ford at all however if I were going to look for one I'd have to look for the 7.3 power stroke. Good luck, sorry for my n babbling.

Im looking as well I have a 2000 dodge automatic with 410s and the tranny has 4000 on a fresh build. Im thinking of selling both my trucks and getting a D Max. I have a friend that has a very nice 05 3500 srw dodge with 145000 on it with a 6 speed manual that's awfully tempting but he is asking 25000 for it.. Im still debating?

I just bought a 2007.5 New body style GMC DuraMax / 6speed Allison 2500HD...Got it from my brother who never pulled a trailer, serviced it every 3,000 and only has 27,000 miles on it...He wanted $25,000 and I never batted an eye. The sad thing is that he sold it because he has terminal cancer and is selling out so he can establish a trust fund for his granddaughter..Just got back from Maryland where he lives...Flew out and drove the truck back...Been back there three times in the last 6 months...It's not all bad...He's headed to heaven with a smile on his face. The 7.3 isn't a Ford motor, it's a International Harvester (Navistar) designed motor. There were two different 7.3s the early one was the 7.3 IDI which lasted from 1986 to 1994 (last two years had a optional turbo) then from 94 to 03 it was the 7.3 which was the T444E but Ford called it the Powerstroke . Excellent motor.

I knew you would have the lowdown on the 7.3 ford...thanks...I am very confused on what I really want now, since it might be a back up work truck or main work truck it just depends on what I come across for sale.....If the gas prices stay like they are then I can hunt with my 460 f250 4x4 and not break the bank,....

I have a 01, z71 Ls about same mileage, same engine, It is all rust from our new york weather and salt, but i would not have any concerns at all, to drive it coast to coast , I think you got a good deal. I feel this one, is better than that ford diesel..

That's great news, my 04 Silverado has the 4.8 vortex and trying to find a buyer myself. Last guy tried to low ball me greatly. Great truck but has rust and isn't enough truck to pull my 7000lbs camper.
Good luck this season!

I have a neighbor with a Silverado 1500 with 215,000 miles and 4 new tires for $2000 obo. Typical rust. He says it runs good. Typical rust. Trucks certainly hold their value but hard to do without one.
