Not wanting to hijack so I have this idea. Tomorrow I am headed to the range...gonna be 8-9 mph winds sw. I will be shooting to the NW...a little. So I went and got 4 1/4x4' steel rods. Goint to attach 2'of surveyors tape to the. And set them out every 50 yds. I figure if thats.all I ever use the. I will become "somewhat" profecient using them. Opinions please? Drop

Wind definitely is a big factor in our game. There are a LOT of variables, bullet weight/ BC/ speed/etc but you are on the right path.
Practice makes proficient.
In hunting situations wind is often blowing and sometimes really hard. Slow low BC bullets make for lots of bad hits.
Practice in varying wind conditions and speeds and write down the deflections for given conditions.
You can make a chart and tape on your scope bell or your stock....

Drop, I have an app on my phone that will correct for wind. The challenge is actually knowing the wind speed. It is fairly good, but like Bill said you still need to make you a chart with different conditions. the problem I have is after reading the wind condition, taking too long to shoot. The wind can change right now, and then everything you corrected for has completely changed.

Has any one had a chance to use the gunwerks range finder that gives you all the correct info? Wonder how good it really does. Might not work for our ml but rifles.

So I will post results in a little while. I will send some pics to Richard and ask him to post them . But I can tell you this there were a LOT of times when the.50 yd flag was out to the right...the 100 yd flag was straight away....the 150 yd flag was hard out to the left....200yd glag was just lightly fluttering....they refer.to this.place as " The toilet bowl". And the flags are going to be 3' the next time Drop

You are on the right track Russel................A better idea is if you can attach the surveyor's tape to a stiff wire (bent on a 90* angle and stuck in a hole in the top of the rod. This makes the movement of the tape much more sensitive and helps keep it from getting wrapped around the rod. A set of wind flags with daisy wheels would be ideal. The motion of the wheel spinning along with the angle of the ribbon tend to give a better indication of whats happening. They are available commercially along with telescoping poles. Most shooters like to have their flags at the height their bullets are traveling.

Tuesday I was able to shoot a .829 5shot... Today I did some more load testing. The loads are listed on the targets. But it seems to favor the 75 76 and 77 gn with the 275BE IMR 4198 powder the last shot of the day was with the 275MH and 77 gn of IMR 4198.... It was a good group....until the deer came out...and I lost focus lol All groups are 5 shots....I am amaised at how much the wind flags help. Winds were13mph and gusty up to 19. I was able to get a .841 a 1.14 and a 1.5. Pretty happy with that for the wind Thanks Richard for your help posting my pics...and the advice on wind flags! drop

Has any one had a chance to use the gunwerks range finder that gives you all the correct info? Wonder how good it really does. Might not work for our ml but rifles. It is like any other solver and only gives as good as it gets. You put garbage in and it puts garbage out. Good data in, good data out. I recently had this discussion (actually called him on his BS) with their "head shooting instructor" who apparently can mash the X-ring on demand with tiny little groups at any given range (eventually admitted he walked on after a first round miss); that works in war but not sport hunting. So, you must be able to determine wind speed and angle which he can't with 100% accuracy (nor can anyone else although there are a few who are really close) for the solver to give you an accurate firing solution. Drop, The wind flags are good trainers but there are no wind flags when you hunt. Having them the height of the bullet is a good idea and it works for the short range BR dudes(looks like a wildflower field with all their spinners and streamers) but when you talk long range (XC, HP, Palma) there is a reason you see them 12-15ft up in the air and they are long, heavy flags; not many ranges have them because they don't need them. The surveyor's tape works for wind but I find it a little overly sensitive since it takes about a 5mph wind to lift paper but the surveyor tape will move with less. Try taping or gluing a BB or two to the end until it gives realistic wind speeds (vanes shouldn't move until 4mph). To calculate wind speed from a flag you estimate the angle from the staff and divide by four to get wind speed. Learn to correlate what you learn from the flags to things in your environment: 1-3mph smoke or the little squeeze bottle things will drift, you can feel about 3-4mph on your face, wind shouldn't move vanes until 4-6mph, 5-8 should rustle leaves, bushes, etc, and 7-10mph keeps leaves in constant motion. You can learn to read mirage too but it takes a little more practice and when winds get over 8mph and mirage starts to flatten out you can't rely on mirage alone. Above 10mph I don't think it's ethical to shoot at animals past 400yds unless you and your family are going to starve if you don't pull the trigger.
