No, this is not a report saying I won the match.............Well, I got one little piddly 3 rd. pl. in light gun score but that don't mean squat. Actually, this is not a report as such but some pictures along with some "Wisdom?"
Ok, so you will see a picture of the motley crew (not everyone there). We had 52 competitors there on Saturday. Notice Richard with the Hankin dayglow green shirt and my piddly little plaque. The guy next to me with the nice eagle trophy is Sam Hall. He got the most Piedmont points this year and got the trophy. Actually he did not win anything in the days match but generally did very well most of the year. The guy with the multiple plaques did most of the winning. The picture pretty well shows how darn far 600 yards is. Those smaller berms right behind us are for .22 rimfire silhouette matches and only go out to 100 yards.
The targets I have displayed are all four of my light gun and all four heavy gun targets in no particular order. I shoot my light 16.5 lb. gun in both classes. There is about 1/2 dozen guys who shoot guns weighting upwards of 50 lbs in that class but light guns have won numerous times in the class.
We shoot two targets at one sitting with a two minute cool down period and then a 2 min. sighter period between targets. There are 16 benches so 52 shooters needed four relays. After the four relays, you got back and do it all over again to get your four targets..................Then the whole scenario begins again with heavy gun.
We wind up with three places in light gun score and also three places in group. Then your ranking is score and group are added together and the shooter with the lowest number becomes the class winner. In my case, I was thired in score and 16th. in group which gave me a 19 which placed me 7th. out of 52 shooters.
In Heavy gun I placed 6th. in group and 21st. in score for a 27 which put me in 10th. place. Then when they add both your light and heavy gun rankings a TWO gun agg. is reached and there I placed 7th. overall. Not great but somewhat competitive.
So, with the targets I wanted to show how you can have a small group with a high score and a small group with a low score? Also how you can cry when you get four nice ones and then a democrat shows up to turn what would be an other wise good group into a not so good group
Mind you, the conditions were as good yesterday as they have been all year. Generally overcase for most of the morning with little wind conditions and little mirage but those conditions somewhat decreasing as the afternoon rolled around with more sun, mirage and slight wind. So what happens is you get three or four shots off in one condition and then while you shooting, the wind either lets up or picks up to ruin that group
This is what makes long range shooting, whether formal competition or deer hunting so difficult? We generally have a few wind flags out but not much further than maybe 200 yards.........it get hard to see them much further out unless a range provides something like wind socks........which this range does not. The same this happens when you think you can make that 4 or 500 yard shot on deer and really have no idea what the wind is doing out that far. You can see on my targets how much the wind or shooter error can move a high BC bullet out of an otherwise tight little group. I think shooters/hunters think because they are shooting a big heavy bullet that the wind will not effect it?............WRONG! These 6mm 108 gr. Berger BT's I shoot probably have a BC a little up over .5 and are traveling at some 2950 fps out of my 6mmbrx (a 6mm BR with the shoulder pushed .1" forward to increase case capacity). I shoot 33 gr. of Varget from a 28" Brux 1 - 8.5 x .236" barrel. Most ML'er bullets don't exceed .4 and most of them are less. It is the BC that keeps that bullet from "drifting" off target when that little breeze occurs. So as good as some groups have been gotten by a few shooters with really good equipment (and most of them only 3 shots) the chance for long range misses or wounds on deer size game is a definite reality under all but the best conditions.
Oh, and the guy that is fourth from the left with the white goatee?, that is ariborneike's brother Larry and then next one is his son Paul. The guy with the suspenders right behind the guy with the plaques kneeling? That is my shooting partner Billl I mention. Herman was deer hunting and was a NO SHOW!
