The leg was feeling somewhat better so I was able to make it to the range.
I started out by sighting in a NEW old scope I found up on the shelf??? I had bought a Vortex Viper 6.5 x 20 x 44 back in July of 2015 which Mid Way had on sale (didn’t really need it, but the price was good and I wanted a back up scope for one of the muzzle loaders). At the time I did not have a set of rings for it so I guess I put it up on to of my cabinets in the shop and forgot about it. Anyway, found it a few weeks ago and got a set of rings. I took off the Sightron on the HIS rifle and put the Vortex on and sighted it in today so I have an extra scope ready to go if the Sightron takes a dump up in Kentucky. After some seven shots and having it dead nuts on, I removed it and put the Sightron back on and the first shot was dead on. Love that!
With the Sightron back on I fired a couple of shots to zero the 300 AccuMax at 100 and then took it out to 300. I shot a total of six shots since #3 (for what ever reason?) went out of the group but the rest grouped fairly well. This was a 8/65……..N-110/H-4198 duplex which averaged 2785 fps but had a terrible ES of 57??? Mind you, this load shot ES in the single digits with the 300 gr. XTP’s a couple of weeks ago? Both the XTP’s and the 300 AccuMax’s were shot with no wads. This load with the AccuMax always shot low ES’s when I was using Clays as a booster. Not sure if it’s the slower N-110 getting the bullet fattened up or the fact the XTP has more bearing surface?
Next I wanted to try 70 gr. of straight N-120 with the 300 AccuMax and after two shots 2.3” apart and 46 fps apart at an average of 2710 fps, I gave up.
The third and final group was with the 275 AccuMax and a 8/66…4759/H-4198 duplex was used. I am going to go out on a limb and say that the first shot was out of the group since a change in powder and bullet occurred. I have seen this happen many times before! It is not carved in stone, but has happened to me many times. After that, shots 2,3 and 4 formed a very nice .725” group. I was going to leave it at that but the “Five Shot Fever” got the best of me and sure as S#%t #5 went out to the right a bit but then #6 came right back in. Velocity average for shots 2 thru 6 was 2830 with a ES of 52……..still not what I like. Also, that first shot was 41 fps slower than the average with might have accounted for the low shot. So even with the wide fifth shot 1.112” was acceptable for five shots at 300 yards.
Next week I might try using a wad and see what happens? When I switched from Clays to N-110 I had to use a wad under the 300 SST’s as they would not stabilize so maybe the AccuMax needs a wad to seal the pressure better?
Since we had an excavator doing work on our pistol range, which I have been involved with, I had to spend less time shooting and more time with him getting the proper grade on the range.
