So I got my barrel (CVA Hunter) back from Jeff a couple of weeks ago and took it out for the first time today. All I can say is it's freaking neat. I'll doubtfully ever shoot another smoker again. It was chilly and a tad windy, but after I got comfortable with a few shots, I was able to gang up all of the rest of my shots a little smaller than a tennis ball or so at 100 yards. The last shot was at the 200 yard 8 inch plate and dang if I didn't hit it. Not bad for the first time out I'm thinking. In the wind too. Thanks for all of the info from y'all and thanks Jeff. Jimmy

Welcome jimmy! Neat post and congratulations. Any chance you post a pic? And remember to mark that loading/range/ram rod, safety 1st! I'll bet you're already thinking about another SML. 10

No pics this time, but will try to remember next week. Safety first for sure. I was a little nervous the first few shots but it passed quickly. I marked the rod and was shooting 55 grains of IMR 4198 with a 275 b.e. I should be under max for the gun im thinking. The b.e.'s loaded perfectly out of the bag just like Jeff's video. I have some .40/sabot combos that I was going to try, but don't see any need to fool with them after how the b.e.'s performed.

Good luck with the new rifle! And while your at it, try some of Kyle's 275 AccuMax bullets. I am not going to go out on a limb and say they will shoot better ............but? with the higher BC, will shoot a bit flatter. Being new to this game you will have to understand that these sabot less bullets need to stabilize in order to accurate. Bearing surface along with pressure exerted on the base (which causes obturation or fattening of the bullet). Some bullets with lesser bearing surface than a comparable weight different bullet "may" need more pressure to get them "grabbing" the rifling. Also the fit of the bullet is important. Take a loose fitting bullet that will not stabilize and "knurl" it or fatten it up and it becomes stable? Take a bullet with a thicker or harder jacket that will not stabilize and go to the same weight bullet with a thinner/softer jacket and boom! Bughole accuracy. Some bullets just need more speed/pressure to get them to obturate than others. Then there is the question of wads (which kind...veggie or wool?). Very often a bullet will not stabilize without a wad (I had this happen two weeks ago with the 300 gr. SST) so you add one and all of a sudden they shoot great?.............I have had others that shot better and stabilized without a wad? Some will swear by veggie wads and others are hardcore wool wad guys? What I am saying is this: Smoke less muzzle loading...........particularly sabot-less is a different animal and very often you have to do your home work (or should I say "range-work") to find out which combination is right for you?.......................Duplexing is can be an option to get bullets to obturate but that is food for another thread. In any event, it looks like you are on the right track. Nobody here will steer you wrong and if you should want to talk you can PM me for my number and we can "BS a while!"! There are many others here who will do the same!

I had the same gun. 60 gr of 4198 with the BE was the best accuracy for me. 56 gr of 4198 under a 200sst with hlbs was the most accurate. You will need a sizing die if you want to shoot other bullets.

Welcome to the world of SML's.
Parker BE's will for most work without sizing.
However as mentioned prior Jeff sells a sizing die and this would afford you a much wider selection of bullets to fine tune your shooting.
The Pittman 275 AccuMax would be at the top of the recommended list.
As Richard stated this is a highly accurate flat shooting bullet, not to mention devastating on deer.
Best of luck.
