My primary deer ML's are H&R 45-70 conversions. They both have Savage MLII plugs in them and I Always duplex in them. Converting a Savage plug to LRMP has been talked about but that is as far as it went. Well, I made a new Savage plug that is recessed to shorten the flame channel to that of the HIS plug. It is set up for Jeff's HIS module and could be set up for other primer modules. Before it comes up, I do not plan on making these plugs for sale but hopefully someone will pick up the idea and run with it. In a break action, chamber a primer and extract the plug. Measure the length and set up the new plug the same with a module installed. Most all conversions that Slufoot did were set to .180" of primer insertion. I have measured 5 guns and they are all the same. There are a lot of conversions out there using the Savage plug, and a good many bolt guns too. I will post range results in a few days.

That looks really cool Jerry. Can't wait to hear about and see some results.

I believe a 700ml is going to need a flame channel to reduce pressure on bolt same as is done with 209 primer system. So recessing bushing deep like is done on centerfire action with locking lug bolt will put way to much pressure on 700ml bolt retaining screw.

Its about time somebody enhanced the savage plug since there are many smls that use it...Way to Go Jerry....

A Remington 700ml is not set up for lrmp...at least until a new bolt nose is made which IMHO should never happen because not everyone would shoot loads under 45kpsi. The bolt and retaining mechanism are not designed to handle near chamber pressures. Adding flame path volume near that of a standard 209 plug would severely handicap the lrmp to the point of lowering it's reliability to that of a 209 system.

You can't get away with the fact that a Savage (nose seal) type plug will not seal like a rear seal (HIS/ASG) plug will. Yes for low pressure single powder or mild duplex loads with sabots (or full formed bullets) they will work effectively. As soon as you go sabotless and have the need for high pressure build up to obturate bullets, the Savage plug will not hold up. And as Jerry mentioned, putting a longer flame channel is counter productive for LRMP's. Break actions have their place in this SML equation but if you want to run with the BIG DOGS (velocity wise and heavy bullet weights) go with a FAT barrel, CF action and a HIS ignition system...............or comparable 209 rear seal system.!
