Getting the katahdin converted by Jeff with the HIS system and wanted to get some starting load info with h4198 and possibly h4895. I've got quite a few Hornady XTP 200 grain and light blue harvester smooth sabots. I've been reading alot of the loads posted on Dougs but not seeing anyone with katahdin bbls and would also like to try the h4895 as well. Slufoot was one that posted a load online many moons ago so I wanted to ask the members. Thanks for the information.

When i shot 200 gr sst using the blue harvester sabots shootng h4198, i used 60gr with a .06 veggie wad and shot decent til i blew a sabot and had to wire brush my barrel and took out alot of plastic. I switched to a 275 ballistic extreme .451 bullet with 55gr of h4198 sabotless with the .06 veggie wad and shot very good. I now shoot the 270 emax from parker sabotless and ill never shoot sabots again. Less worries. Ive only shot out to 300 yards with it but ran out of powder to try any further. If your gun can take a BE bullet sabotless without sizing id try it. But i havent shot 4895 to give ya any details on that powder. Some ppl shoot sabots great. I was unfortanate with the sabots.

I too would go the no plastic route, 55 grains of 4198 with a 275 is a deer smoker. might need to get a sizing die from Jeff but sizing is easy.

I had bought the pittman 275 accumax bullets to try and had to size them down using the swinglock smooth form die, i didnt kno jeff had his own die til i seen a youtube clip and i wish ida seen it sooner. But i think i sized them too small because my first shot was perfect then 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th shot all keyholed. Cant talk bad about a bullet when it was probably my fault which i havent tried sizing the other bullets again because i had emax bullets to try as well abd they shot very tight groups so i stuck with them to get through deer season. Before next season i will try the new aeromax

Thanks for the information guys. I was going to try the sabots first and then try sabotless when I get the experience with the conversion. I have a coworker that had a bergara bbl converted but that particular bbl was fairly loose so he's using a duplex load. I'd rather not go that route but I appreciate the load information.

I think 4895 will be too slow of a powder for a 20" katahdin barrel but I would start at 56gr H4198 hlb sabot and 200sst or xtp. My apex shoots this load very accurate with no wad and have never blown a sabot. It is a mild load but sufficient out to 200yds.

I used 10/4759 50/4198 LBH sabot 200 SST Bullets With all the hype about not firing in cold weather I then went to straight 4198 60 grains shot very good in my Brake action Encore and H&R

4895 is too slow for most normal muzzle loader applications. It would either need a booster or very large quantities with very heavy bullets.........Not what I think you are looking for. Out of 267 powders listed on one burn rate chart, 3031 is #148 and H4895 is 168 (fastest to slowest!) If you look thru the loads used here you will see how much 3031 has to be used to get the same velocities that much lesser amounts of the faster 4198 uses. Now go to your 4985 which is again much slower that 3031 and you will see why it is NOT the powder to use!

I just got my CVA Hunter back from Jeff last week. It looks killer. Planning on shooting this coming weekend. I was thinking about going the 55 grain/275 route for starters too. Scat just posted a trace for 60 grains of 4198/275 be the other day. I think it came in around 43k p.s.i. or so. I think that would be around tops for a 1" barrel. Probably a good bit of recoil too.

Just received the bbl today and got the Vortex scope mounted up and just waiting for some decent weather to sight it in. Going to pick up some H4198 powder first and I posted a question on dougs board in regards to cleaning the HIS plug after shooting. I'm going to start with the sabot loads for now till I get comfortable with the smokeless muzzleloader system. Thanks for all the information on current loads since both forums have a wealth of knowledge.

Something else you may consider if you already have the powder. Low amounts of SR4759 is rock solid dependable and good for upto around 2300fps before it starts getting hard on sabots. IIRC somewhere around 36gr-38gr will get you there with extremely safe pressures. Higher amounts are still relatively low peak but the rise to peak gets a bit rough on the sabots.
