ok, as an example.... if i use 50gr I4198 in my 50cal and get 1800fps what would be the equivalent grain weight of I3031 to achieve 1800fps ?..... fwiw, i'm using saboted 300gr .458 jhp bullets i have quickload but just cant justify its near probability to far reality for non-cartridge loads. thank you, and i appreciate your information

3031 is not the powder to use in your .50! It is way too slow. If you really want to know, take some vials of 3031 (or your powder scale) and shoot it and see? Nobody I know of shoots 3031 in a .50? You would probably need 125 grs and the powder column would be so long ignition would be terrible and you will see flames coming from the muzzle as all the powder will not ignite in the bore.

50gr = 1454 55gr = 1589 60gr = 1720 62gr = 1791
i guess i answered my own question by doing what Richard said...."shoot it and see" so, i did and all powder was spent and bore was clean. noticable less recoil difference than 50gr I4198
and there was smaller increments of powder tested, just wanted to list easily.
thanks

Was there less recoil when you got both powders at the same velosity? That surprises me because it would take more powder with the 3031 to get the same velocity. Maybe because 4198 is a quick burn and 3031 is a slower burn. Maybe more of a push recoil ?

Maybe more of a push recoil ? yes, more of a push.....not a hard hit others have said the same thing about fast/slow powders. there only 5 steps apart on the hodgdon burn chart there are folks around here using n133 and benchmark as there propellant here in the south. could it be a temperature issue....it was 79 at the time i was testing ?? and on other sites (not doug's) folks are substituting T7 with 3031 in the 50cal ML's with good luck
