So yesterday I was checking how my rifle and action all leveled up and found something very interesting. I was talking to Linebauh and he's very good about telling you like it is. 😀 I sent him a couple pictures and he told me not to trust my little level so I started rotating it and look what I found. Rotated and now it's level, what? This is why hanging a line or using a known straight line for mounting your scope is necessary when trying to make sure your cross hairs are lined up correctly. Everyday I'm learning something new and when you put it into real world practices it makes even more sense.

So what was defective? Was the small level on your scope rail defective? What was the defect?

I hang a plumb bob about 80 yards out.

I hang a plumb bob about 80 yards out. I usually do but this time I didn't because I was being lazy.

you can do all you can to get it right but in the end the only true way is to shoot it on a very tall target board @ 100 yds with a plumb line drawn on it and everything on the gun level, shoot a 2 shot group on a dot down low with group centered on the line, spin the turret way up and hold on the same dot while everything is level, if you are still on the line with your next group you know you are close, if left or right then slightly rotate the scope in the direction of the plumb line and retorque, start over until it prints in a straight line.

bill is right, I have also on picatinny bases seen variance's from slot to slot(rail tolerance) I use several level's & check points while setting up. its a imperfect world & I am a prime example of that.

I have cheap plastic levels routed into my target frames. My lead sled has a level glued on it and I have a level on my scope All three must align!

Have you tried the level in your smart phone?

My smart phone works fine even if it is not level!
