How do you measure barrel length? I ordered a couple barrels from Krieger at 28 & 1/4". And that is what they are. BUT for actual useable barrel length do you deduct the length of the breech plug? Now your down to 26&1/4" or so? And then there is also the length of powder coloum? So how much of the barrel actually gets used by the bullet? Just pondering on a gray windy cold afternoon. Should I be ordering longer barrels. Like my 26&1/4 is actually going to be 23 inches of usable barrel. Yeah I know I am confused. BUT those who know me uderstand Drop

The barrel length is the total length of the barrel, from end to end. When ordering a barrel you should always order it 1 inch longer than needed because you will need to cut off one inch at the muzzle end so that you can get to good rifling.. When the barrel is lapped all the work is done from the muzzle end and that wears out or funnel shapes the muzzle just a little. Most barrel makers recommend you cut off 1 inch.
Now usable barrel length would be measured from where the bullet is sitting in a muzzleloader and on a center fire you would measure from where the rifling starts, approx. the same as where the bullet is in the chamber but some guns have a lot of free bore and that would not be counted as usable barrel length.
Always order your barrels longer than needed and cut them to length once you get them mated up to your action.

I wouldn't be overly concerned Russ unless its a full blown hot rod, I have done several with 23" barrels, will the speed be as high? no but just how fast do we need if it's a hunting gun? for me in a carry rig 23-24" in a light weight stock is ideal, for a bench gun? keep in mind shorter is stiffer no matter what the barrel diameter is, short barrels can be very accurate too, ask NY Hunter.
A long barrel will help in a bench rig to get the speed up but if its a dual purpose gun those long barrels can be a pita in the field, I know cause I toted one all season, not for old men or whimp's, I fit both descriptions.
depending on powder used your 28 1/4 will have somewhere around 24 1/2" of burning room after you take 1" off and crown it.

Don't worry be happy you got plenty of barrel to do what ever you want if you look back on my post about shooting my Douglas barrel test gun it only has a 22 1/2 inch barrel ahead of the recoil lug and when you factor in the powder column is about 20.5 and it still turned up the same velocity as my longer barrels I was able to get over 2900fps with a 300gr bullet using IMR 3031 Unless your building a deicated bench gun there is no real need for a extra long barrel.

Jeff I have been ordering my barrels at least an inch over the finished length for the reason you just mentioned. I have one in the safe that was a 31" blank and cut back to 28 & 1/4. I was going to finish it off at 26 & 1/4 as a hunting barrel but Re-thinking it now. Obviously the 28" Krieger in the purple gun hasn't handicapped me yet. I have not been able to surpass its accuracy either. Speaking of that......Jeff would you make me a double thick gong 6 inches square hung out there at 444 yds? I need the practice. Maybe rather than double thicknesses you could hang 2 pieces of 1 foot long chain on each bottom corner to keep it from flinging over? Drop

Can't argue with those kinds of results. I use these guns for bench and hunting as I hunt from a shack. They are way to heavy to carry any further than the shack. That's a shade over 1/4 mike from where I park. The setup I have is a pretty balanced dual purpose outfit. Drop

Hey I have been down the long barrel road with my long range guns. I have had two guns with 40" barrels that were 2" in diameter the barrels along weighed 35LBS. that is a lot of steel. They were both epoxy into a 8" steel bedding block you can't support that kind of weigh off a action. The longest barrel I have now is a 36" Krieger chambered in a 7MM STW that is also a block bedded rifle.
I just don't see the need for a 30" barrel on a M/L. One thing the Rem M/L action has over a CF action is the really long threaded barrel shank. A full inch more on a solid action with no mag cut out makes for a much more accurate platform and it is better suited for hanging a longer barrel off the action. 1.750 of threads vs .700 big difference.
