I do have a 45 caliber. I was just looking for a start point to work up.

80gr with a 300gr bullet. Carlos said he got around 2450fps with that load in a 22" barrel. QL predicts less than 35kpsi IIRC.

I just purchased a pound of 3031 as well and I'll be starting load development soon using Rempac and savage plug. I'll probably start at 82-85 grains with a smooth form 300 grain accumax.

How long is your barrel? 24". I will be a little short and a little light in the bullet to max the performance of 3031. But 70 grains of H4198 has a stout recoil. So I thought I might try something else.

Your are going to find 3031 is definitely not the powder for a light bullet! You may even have ignition problems. 3031 is for bullets from a minimum of 275 on up into the 300's! The shorter the barrel the faster the powder needs to be.

The above traces were 300 sst's in a 25" barrel. You will be fine with your listed 300 sst and a 24" barrel. I would start with 85 grains of 3031.

I have a pound of 3031 to try also. My barrel is 28" and I'm using the 275 grain accumax, so I'm planning on starting higher. Maybe 95 grains?? I'm waiting on more of scat's pressure traces to see where the pressures will be.

They are shooting 95 gr. with 300 gr. bullets so you should be fine with the 275's. It is not always the speed you need to be concerned with but the accuracy. I shoot both 600 and 1,000 Bench rest and am not using the all the speed I can generate with my cartridge. Its a trade off. If top speed produces the best accuracy, that's one thing but generally best accuracy is obtained at a lower speed and that is where the click adjustments on your scope come in!

I agree. Accuracy is my main concern, if I can get more velocity with out more pressure that would be even better. I always say, it doesn't matter how fast you miss.
