I just put a new scope on one of my guns . The bell is very close to the barrel . I can slide 2 sheets of paper under the scope bell maybe 3 . I tried to do some research last nite . What I found on the internet was 2 to 3 sheets of paper was enough clearance . I just wanted to check with you guys to make sure that is correct . Thanks

I would like more clearance than that on these big guns. More like .050" for me. If it was a .22 I would feel differently. Barrels flex and so do scope tubes under recoil. I always get my rings as close to the ends of the tube as possible. I believe this will cut down on scope failures.

Some say barrel whip can cause contact between the scope and barrel if too close, I have a .40 with a scope closer than that. One can barely see light between and a single thin sheet of paper will not go under. I have shot it that way for over 6 years (although not a lot) without trouble. Maybe I have been lucky, it shoots well so I left it alone.
