I found a few of the barnes 250 boattail bullets and decided to try them in my new 45. I shot 1 three shot group at 100 yds using clays/4198=7/63 Didn't use a wad just set them on top of the powder. Some were pretty loose going down and one even slid down the barrel by itself,I just pushed it down tight with the ram rod. I figured it was just something to play with until I shot the one holer at 100 yds.So decided to try it at 300 with a 3 shot group.Had to guess at how many clicks to go up,I had been shooting 300 gr bullets before. I first thought these were going to hit all over the place. Since they did so well at 100 I tried 2 three shot groups at 300.was lucky with the guess the first shot hit low on the left side of the steel plate. It was with 7/63 clays/4198. In stead of clickin up more I just some Kentucky windage on the black dot The second group was with 6/66,clays and 4198. I have about 7 more of these and want to try them in my other 45. The lower bullet hole in the target is with a 300 sst checking to see where it was shooting. So far with my shooting today I have only shot 20 shots out of the rifle. One was a doe at 300 yds with a heart shot.

nothing wrong with boattail bullets, just not user friendly with a wad. I think the boattail got a bad wrap years back when everyone shot sabots and then wads, neither were good with the boattail, now that guys are shooting at warp speed with no wads I think they would work fine.
YOU LISTENING KYLE?

YOU LISTENING KYLE? Yep, especially full formed boatails would work great and get the BC up even higher.

If there were a full formed 250 boat tail bullet I'd revisit full forming especially if the BC was closer to .300

After many years of on-again, off-again attempts, last summer I finally got the boat tailed 245 Spitfires to shoot MOA, but not the sub-MOA you are getting, Herman. Same deal, seated directly on top of powder...no wads.

Last night I sized some of the barnes 245 BTHP to give them a try.I had shot a good group with them back in 06.Didn't shoot at different distance because of the cost and my sst's did as good as I could hope for on deer, and a lot cheaper to shoot.Same reason I stick with the sst's instead of the more custom bullets. Still have the 50 cal and it does fine with the 250 sst's I want to try them in the new muzzie and another one I just put new barrel on with lukes plug. Have a long time to play until deer season starts.Want to revisit the 200sst and 225sst's(452) This is a group I shot with the 50 cal using the yellow sabots that came with them in 06.:

Well I tried the 245 BTHP barnes and it was a flop, shot a 3-shot group with a new barrel pac=nor and it ended up about a 2foot group if you want to call it that.
Tried one shot in my new custom and it hit low in the target board side ways, you could see the whole bullet length wise.
May hae been the load I was using, don't know Don't know if I will try any more of these or not but want to try the blue tipped boat tail, think these are called tez? in the new pac-nor barrel. They were 250 gr.

Excellent shooting Herman. I think you kind of dispelled some of the old ideas that boattail bullets won't shoot. I agree with some of the others thoughts on the boattails. I have been having exellent results shooting Barnes boattail bullets with no wads. It makes me wish I could ff some lead core boattail bullets without deforming them for a trial.
Surely somebody on here has tried a lead core boattail bullet smooth formed??? It would be nice to hear the results.
