I know there are different barrel contours being used for Smokeless Muzzle Loaders. Some being heavier contours than others. I realize the smaller contours result in a lighter build, but are you giving up any accuracy and/or consistency? Accuracy is pretty definitive, as in small group size. However, by consistency, I mean how consistently does the SML shoot small groups. And, does point of impact change easily with different holds and/or shooting positions?
Mr. Hankins uses a #6 or #17 barrel contour for his centerfire SMLs. I am not sure what the other builders are using with regard to barrel contours. Is any accuracy and/or consistency giving up using the smaller barrel contour?
I have had both heavy and lighter barrel contours for SMLs. However, I was never able to make an apples to apples comparison. My lighter barrel contours I shot saboted (and no longer own). And my heavier barrel contours I shot sabotless.

I have used many modified sendero contours and also the #6 you mentioned, both contours can be very accurate. with the smaller contours shorter means stiffer and with repeated firing the longer thinner barrels tend to have more POI shift than say the # 17 you mentioned. JMO but if using the #6 I would stay below 25", again JMO. Jeff has barreled a few #6s for me and they all shot very well, some extremely well. IMO the #6 in the 23-24" range is the perfect carry weight and length for a do all SML

I have 2 of Jeff's builds right now one with a # 17 (28") and one with the #6 (26") and I see no difference with accuracy out to 500yds. The pics are of my #6 ultimate conversion and Target at 100yds when I first got it from Jeff. Once again I don't see the difference in accuracy between these 2.

I as well have had both contours and both shot well the only difference is recoil. If you want a do all gun go with the #6 which is what I have now. If you don't like recoil go with the #17 but be prepared for weight difference. I cant tell any difference in accuracy.

For the guys that have both a #6 and a #17, what are you seeing in weight difference between guns?

Almost 3 #'s if I remember correctly but my 17 was 28 inches and my 6 is 26 inches

I have TOO many SMZ's. I've seen very little accuracy issues associated with barrel whip (usually associated with longer / thinner contours). I've read a lot about it, but my thinner contours shoot with or better than the heavy contours. The earlier comment about felt recoil in the lighter guns couldn't be more accurate.....I have a light Encore that will rock your world without the brake.
