Hello all I am a firearms safety instructor for the state of Minnesota. I have been using a CVA Wolf with 30 grains of powder to introduce our students to Muzzlelader shooting. I would like to do the same thing with a smokeless muzzleloader to save myself a lot of spit-patching and other headaches. I can't come up with any reason I could not keep reducing charges till I got approximately 1000 fps. I am wandering if anyone could come up with a reason this would not work? This would be done with a CVA 45-70 I would have Jeff turn into a smokeless muzzleloader for me.
Any help would be appreciated.

I did a test once with one of my bolt guns. I loaded the minimum amount of powder I could, just enough to fill the plug with a little extra, If I remember correctly it was a 12 grain charge of IMR 4198 and I shot a 275 grain bullet at 650 something FPS. So I think you could easily get to the 1000 FPS mark with out much difficulty.

back when I was duplexing I shot a 275 on purpose with just the booster, 10 grains of N-110 I think, I don't remember the exact speed but I do recall i was greatly suprised. you will for sure need to use a fast powder to build decent pressure. 4759 or N-110 would be a start.
