Not really too much to write about today………only four groups and all at short range (100 yards) If they don’t do well at 100 they will not do well at distances beyond and anyway wanted to shoot the AR a bit.
I always like having a baseline when I start comparing so after some foulers and a sighter, I shot a group with the 300 XTP along with 8/66 Clays/H-4198. Velocity averaged 2792 fps (right on target) with a nice 14 fps ES. No rhyme or reason but the first two shots interlocked and then the next three clustered just a tad above. The three shot went .760 and the full five at 1.070”. Still not bad for a “dum-dum” bullet?
Next up with the XTP I used 8 gr. of Clays along with 70 gr. of V V N-130. (one fouler shot) I have several pounds of it but don’t think it is being made anymore so no sense in showing too much if guys can’t get it? I knew it was slower than 4198 so that is why I upped it to 70 gr. As can be seen, it only averaged 2695 fps. That is 100 fps slower than 4198 AND, with 3 gr. more powder. It would probably work well for those using large amounts of it with heavy bullets as a single. V V is definitely one of the cleaner burning powders. My guess is that I would need about three more grains to equal 4198 and I don’t see much in the way of better accuracy………more or less equal?
Note: my average was with the first four shots……..funny, the fifth one was 25 fps higher and it showed on the target with the 5th. shot higher and just out of an other wise ½” group……….but still under MOA. Along with the three shot group right about at ¼”.
While I had the barrel stoked with N-130 I decided to shot a group with Kyle’s 300 gr. AccuMax. I consider shot #1 to be a fouler (switching bullets) and did not include it in the nice .269” three shot group. Even so, all four went into .797” (only had four duplex loads left so no 5 shot group)
For the last group, I went back to the 8/66 duplex along with the 250 gr. XTP and put together a decent .444” group. Note the very last shot being about 37 fps faster than the first two? For whatever reason, this bullet went down the barrel VERY tight. Which explains the increased speed..
I may try upping the N-130 a few grains and see what it does? (Maybe a potential load for the CHALLENGE ) “One never knows ……do one?”
Herman shot a nice group at 300 with the 250 gr. SST and the 6/66 Clays/4198 load that had ONE fps ES.
