Hank, I noticed you use 60 gr IMR 4198 in a CVA Hunter .45-70 conversion shooting a .45 cal 275 BE. Does that mean 60gr under the same wt/type bullet in a cartridge in the Hunter .45-70 is safe? I'm not wanting to 'Wildcat' anything, I was just curious as 60 Gr sounded like a pretty hot load for this rifle. I have a Hunter in .45-70 and love it. Very accurate with the 325 gr Leverevolution's. Appreciate any info you can offer. Thanks, Bill Ferguson

Not Hank, but IMO, land riders at .450 won't have the pressure spike that a true .458 bullet will with obturatuion and full engraving at take off. Use a reloading manual for cartridge charges.

Use a reloading manual for cartridge charges. +1 Reloading information is there for a reason. Take it to heart, and start at the low end and work up, looking for pressure. I've got a rifle that showed pressure a full 2 grains short of the listed maximum in my manual. Moral of the story, don't give Murphy's Law a chance. If you're loading a .451 diameter bullet in a 45-70 casing, start low and watch for any sign of pressure.

SML and rifle cartridges are two different animals, while there can be similarities in loads in a given caliber SML is not restricted by case volume and throat engagement, never try SML volumes in cartridge cases if it's above listed max charges, JMO.

Excellent information I often wondered about that same thing. But still check several manuals to be sure

Good info here..... Never ever ever never ever exceed load data for your cartridge shooting rifles or pistols.... SML's are not the same as center fire rifles.
