Glad to find this board, I've been muzzleloader hunting many years with many rifles but never with a smokeless version. Some of my options now are to go with a bolt action build, or have a barrel made for the encore using the 45/70 which seems popular and my last option would be to convert my 209/45 Bullberry Muzzle barrel which I think is a 1/22 twist?
If I order a MGM or BullBerry 45/70 what twist rate? I know wait times seem to be long, MGM usually has stock barrels but twist rates are 1/14. So I guess I'm looking for suggestions. About 60% of my hunting is wooded or logging roads shots out to 200 yards on logging roads but otherwise under 100 yards and 40% field with shots out to about 350 yards. (the field hunts are usually for meat deer) One other consideration would be total build time as I would like to have something by October 2017 and I hesitate to add that I'm a bit recoil sensitive due to a few operations on the spine.
So what to build?

Go with a bolt action in and around 12 lbs with a muzzle brake. Either something built on a Savage MLII, a Rem. 700 ML using the 209 system or a Center Fire action using Hank's LR primer ignition system (HIS) The weight and the brake will be your saving grace when it come to recoil. There are a lot of facts to discuss being new to smoke less. If you want to talk rather than type, send me a PM and I will give you my phone number.

Whatever you decide sounds like a brake is in your best interest.

If you are recoil shy as Richard recommend to you a bolt action with a muzzle break is the best way to go.
Although a break action is suitable for the distances you generally hunt the recoil is considerably more with these lightweight guns even with a muzzle break installed.
A heavier firearm will just absorb the recoil better.
Contact Richard he has a wealth of knowledge to offer you with SML's
Good luck

Your 209/45 bullberry with a savage plug is all you need imo...What plug did they install in yours..? I'm guessing bulberry used a pacnor SS 1/22 twist barrel which is what most earlier sml conversions used.... have a brake installed if the recoil is too stout, but a saboted 195 barnes or 200gn SST should shoot great without too much kick in the shoulder....

lazer--Yes I shoot the 195 barnes with 75 grains by weight of BH209, recoil is not bad. I did speak with Richard and I'm currently looking into some of his suggestions. Lots of info on this site to read. Leaning towards a bolt gun but still would like to go with a SML plug on my Bullberry just to get away from the BH209 powder.

From what i remember, Bullberry did use Pacnor barrels for the 45s. Some of the faster powders in small amounts make great low recoil loads. You can still easily get around 2300fps with a 200gr bullet with or without a sabot using under 34gr of N110 or a little more SR4759. Around 31gr of N110 and a 200gr bullet is a cream puff and gives you about the same fps as BH209 with less recoil. About 36-38gr of SR4759 will do about the same but its no longer being made. N110 is pretty hard on sabots in the 45s so you probably wont be able to use more than around 34gr to 35gr. It will be dead nuts reliable though. No poofs ever.

Correction, looks like my Bullberry 45 barrel is a Douglass barrel with 1:28 twist 416 stainless. This twist rate seems a little slower than most for SML conversion, will this twist rate work with 200-275 grain bare bullets? Also, Could you recommend a proper plug as I know this needs to be replaced as well.
Still researching a bolt gun build looking for a Rem 700ML action no luck yet.

I have a Brux with the same twist in a .45. Perhaps my most accurate barrel, shoots 200 to 225 grain bullets well. Never tried heavier.
